unwanted rooster, what do I do

Post an ad on CraigsList. Say he's free to a good home, just make sure they're not gonna eat him.

Whoever dumped the rooster on you was very irresponsible. Now their difficult decision is yours.

With that said, I appreciate my roosters, although I have 20 hens.

I have had chickens for almost three years. Always had a rooster. If he is sick and around the hens there is a very good posibility they could get what he has. As far as having a rooster with them, he will most likely try to breed with them, a sometimes very disterbing sight, and in that case will have the feathers pulled out of their backs or top of wings from any spurs or claws. I have two hens with no feathers on their backs, the worst of all of them, and one had a bad cut down her side from a spur. The rooster looks like a small turkey, he is very big and ends up smashing any hen he gets on. Not to scare you but of all the attacks I've had from them its been from behind. Talk about scaring the heck out of a person. You almost never hear them coming. Hope this gives you some insight.

Do what you think is best -- quarantine is a good idea. I happen to love having roosters -- I raised 100 this year, and I have 10 standards and 10 bantams, plus 20 of the original 100 still on the place...Some of them are absolute gentlemen. Others are a little funky....but I chase them off from bad behavior (trying to mate with the ducks, etc.) with a long handled feather duster...and they SCREAM and RUN! Otherwise, they are sweet and friendly, just some of them get hormonal sometimes.

Quarantine is a good idea, if you can manage it. Otherwise, it is a risk to your other chickens.

As far as "honoring the person who has trusted you with their rooster", this person has not earned your honor. They dropped their problem on you, uninvited, without asking your permission, and without regard to the safety and health of the birds you already had. No chance for you to assess where the roo came from, and decide if this was a risk you were willing to take. "Trusting you" with their rooster? They're taking advantage of you, with their rooster.
