UPDATE: Babies arrived hale and hearty! One problem though...

LB = light brahma. they are very cute chicks -fluffy smoky grey little bodies with very round little bodies. they are distinctly bigger and rounder than my barred rocks.

Some chicks go after toes and eyes for a few days, but once they realize they can't eat them... they just stop. At just a few days old, they can't really do damage to each other. Have them learn at a week or two old that their pecks can remove an eye though and that is where it gets more problematic. Just let the fuzz butts figure it out when they are soft.

so silkiechicken, just to clarify, you think i should just put them all in together and they will sort it out? no more segregating and trying to mix for 10 minutes every 6 hours or so?

well, i'm trying reintegrating them while at the same time taking away the paper towels and unveiling the pine pellets. i also threw some pasta in there as a double distraction. that sorta worked. she is still going after eyes but is also interested in other things now. and some of the chicks have learned to fight back a little or turn their heads, though there are still a couple who just sit there and take it, which is brutal to watch.

they are all asleep now. we will see...

There
is an eerily similar post at the above link. That makes 3 of you, right?

and yes, i saw that other post with what sounds like exactly the same thing. different chicken breed though so it can't be explained by genetics. is there a third person somewhere with the same problem sharol?

Yep, mine did the same thing. Took a few days for them to stop, and nobody got hurt. All three sets of eggs I hatched did the same thing. It does look like they're really going for blood, and at first I panicked. As long as the brooder light is red, you should be ok.

Now I get to deal with roos with raging hormones! It never ends!

It only lasted a couple days too.
They missed the little fella and snuggled right up to the wire. The bully loved his stuffy frog

Hang in there

Yes, one of the responses in the other link referred to the same problem.

Good news over here. Meanyface has definitely chilled out. there is still the occasional eye peck but everyones' eyes seem to be fine for now, and i go a long while watching them before she identifies herself.

she has been in with the rest for about 18 hours now, and it's safe to say she is going to stay there.
