Update - Chicky is dead due to my FIL's stupidity.

Ok, shes doing much better- I dare say she may be in the clear ( obviously not totally but from the stuck eppisode at least)

Eating drinking and pooping ( on my lap ! ) I've got her under double lights with a cool side but I'll be putting only one light on overnight and she'll return to the coop ( most likely in a cage for a day or two) Saturday. My houes is 72 degrees- one 75 watt light keeps her at about 83...is that a good enough temp ?

I'm going to the what breed am I section to post new pics.. illness pics but still...

She's a chicken i'm sure but she's sure odd!

I guess you can close this thread.

I had a cockerel just a little bit older get stuck a couple days ago. I think he was stuck for two days, in the shade but got really dehydrated. Somehow he got behind a dog crate and put both wings through kennel wire like he was hanging on the cross. Where he was butted up to was right next to a pen with young birds that peeped the same sound he was making and I thought they were just excited for their feed and free time. It wasn't until the second day I took a quick head count and couldn't find him. He is the least desireable bird in the entire pen, so I'm sure no one stole him. I just started tearing the place apart and then I found him. Poor baby! He was thirsty and limp. I made him some really watery mush with chick starter and water. When he drank the water he got some small amount of food in his mouth too, and he drank quite a bit. I put him in a crate by himself with some more watery food mush and a separate dish of clear water and the next day he was a lot better. I left him in there one more day so he would walk strongly and not get picked on. He is doing fine now.

Oh that's wonderful news about her - erm, though not about the poop in the lap.

And yes - fully feathered well mostly 75 ish is great.

Sadly . My FIL is an Asshat and decided to have a passive agressive battle with us over my birthday bbq on the topic of weather or not cats should be kept indoors ( all but 1 of ours are strictly indoor) . . .

He kept letting my kitten out, we kept ( both of us..DF and I !) putting him in all day.

finally i was just getting to sit down after cooking and eat dinner with some friends of ours and he must have let him out.

I found chicky and my favorite white faced spanish ( the only WFS) roo dead in his cage. Chicky was scalped and left. killed for sport. the roo was sliced with claws in his cage ( too many roos here- i keep my really nice stuff in smaller cages w/runs) and bled out.

I just found your thread, read through it and was so glad that Chicky was doing better and then I got to your last post...

That is just heartbreaking.

I'm so sorry.

(are you pretty certain it was a kitten that did this?)

I agree - how horrifying to find.

To be honest, when we had kittens that were outside (I keep mine all in now except the safe one), I took mine into the chicken pen when they were young. I let them look inside the pen for a bit til I saw they had that catlike interest. Then I put them inside with the birds and walked behind the birds so that they scared the kittens a bit.

It sounds harsh, but they got the idea that chickens aren't prey after all, and of course the chickens did absolutely no harm to the kittens (who were brough in afterwards for lots of love and treats).

Since you FIL is behaving regrettably, you might try that. In the mean time I'm so sorry about Chicky and her friend. I hope you did point it out to the FIL - perhaps ask him for the two birds' worth to make him think a bit.
