If you are anti-pesticide, you can do a lot of damage to them by using mayonnaise on your hair. Just work it in down to the roots and put on one of those coloring caps for about 30 minutes. The mayo suffocates the live ones and loosens the glue for any eggs.

It may take you several shampoos to get all the mayo out, but at least you won't be putting poison on your head!

I am against pesticides, I do not like using them at all.
Although when it comes to something as pesky and a breeding machine such as lice. Serve it up on my head I want it dead, dead, dead.
No where in my house, car .. anywhere.

I came down with lice, didn't even know about it. I was even clean about it and so was my house.

I dont know HOW we got it but it was a mess when I came down with it. The girls in the office sprayed down everything and I was sent home to go to doctor and get all the necessary treatments. We bagged up everything, washed, sprayed and stripped down everything! It took us three days to get everything sterile even the cat had to be flea dipped washed with so much protest. And again ten days later, repeat. UGGGGH!

With my DD at pre K , teachers sent notes to all parents about head lice. It was a good thing because our doctors appointment was due that week and doc gave us a clean bill of health on her cute little head. Whew!

Now she will be attending K, I would tell her NOT to borrow anyones comb, hats, scarves, coats, etc. Who knows who got the cooties!

I hope she will listen to her mommy for once!

i know this is going to sound gross but it works as DD had lice her a while back and this was what was recommened as the lice shampoos they have out on the market today the lice build up a resistance to it...
ok what you want to do is get some kind of oil..olive oil works the best but i have used veggie oil..take it and drench your hair with it....cover your head with a towel or plastic shower cap for 1-2 hours...then wash your hair with a shampoo for oily hair..... do this again in 2 weeks and lice should be gone...vacuum and use the spray and wash and dry in a hot dryer clothes and bedding. good luck!!

Head lice is a human only lice. Go to headlice.org, it has some good info. We went through this in April. My son had it from the school bus. GGRR. It took me 3 days to treat everything. Then retreat yourself 7 days later. I am a cosmetologist also. I didn't even mess around both my kids got hair cuts with a #1 guard on the clippers and threw away my combs and the cape I used on them. I hope to never do that again.

Several people on here are right, lice are species specific. I freaked out when my bottle baby goats had it until I read up and learned they would not give them to me. They were in my house for weeks and no human got them. I treated the goaties with sevin dust and that fixed it. Knock on wood, we've never had to worry about human lice though. So while dealing with your household stuff is a pain, your chickies will be fine.

This is what we did to treat my daughter a few years ago too. Except blow drying the hair on the highest setting possible before the oil is an important step because it stuns them from running and hiding in the one teeny spot that oil didn't get to. And we just used canola oil - olive is too expensive!

This also worked for my little sister (whom I believe my daughter got it from) - after my dad laughed at me for the suggestion, and went out and bought lice shampoo that didn't work.
