I went out this morning and my ww pullet had escaped into the big coop from the baby coop. I think the big chickens got her on the back of the head. It was bloody. I cleaned it and put neosporin on it. I put her in a large crate in the house with chick food and water. She ate and drank, now she is sleeping. The wound looks like it's below the skin but not to the bone. Is there anything else I should do?

You did the exact right thing. Keep the neosporin on it and you will more than likely see new feather growth.

Poor baby. Looks like you have things under control. Just keep it clean and puts lots of neosporin on it and it should heal in a couple of days. I am sorry this happened to her.

Thanks for the encouragement. I feel so bad for her.

Should I get antibiotics for her? How long should I keep her separated? She is only one of two in the baby coop and her sister is missing her!

btw - this is our first injured bird so I'm a little new on how to handle it.

I am afraid if you put her back with the other one that it will peck at it more. They will pick at fresh blood. I would keep them separated until it heals a little bit. Can you put them where they can see each other but not be in the same open area? Like putting the injured one in a dog crate inside the area?

No antibiotics. She should not need them. If this was much worse then I would suggest getting some water soluble Tylan to have just in case.

You could try bringing little sis in with her to see how that goes. Nothing wrong with trying. I had my little scalped peep in with its sibs, none of them bothered it.

No, not enough space or fencing to divide it again and I'm afraid she will get too hot if I put the crate outside next to the pen. I'll just keep her in the house for a couple days. Will the other chick still remember her in a day or two?

I don't know if she got out yesterday evening or early this morning but the wound had not dried and the blood around it was bright red. I'm assuming one of the other chickens got her but I'm not sure she was frantically running back and forth trying to get back into the baby coop and the big chickens were in the house laying.
