Hi everyone! This is an update post on my rooster who had his wing ripped off by a bobcat. It healed up nicely and this is almost week 6 of healing. I am making this post for anyone who is might be in a similar situation and hopefully this can provide some help. The first picture is from day 1, I cleaned up some of the spare meat bits hanging off and trimmed his feathers, put on some peroxide and washed it with water really well, sprayed on some blukote then wrapped it with vetwrap. The second picture was from the day after, and I was so surprised to see how much growth there was already. I was going to cut off the bone with bolt cutters but after seeing how much was growing I decided to leave it on and see if the new muscle would be able to cover the bone. I also started him on 125mg doses of amoxicillin twice a day to prevent any bone infection, I looked through my local feed store for clindamycin but could not find any. Again I sprayed with blukote and rewrapped. The third picture is from day 3 and this is where the growth really stopped, again I washed, sprayed with blukote, and rewrapped. The fourth picture is from day 4 and you can see a scab formed on the outside of it, I kept doing the same routine for the next couple days after that just making sure it was clean and covered. The fifth picture is from 15 days after the first day and it kind of just shrunk a little and kept that scab on the outside. I peeled off a bit of the scab and all the muscle under was perfectly healthy. At this point I decided it would be best to cut the bone off, because I didn't think anything would grow over to cover it. After snipping the bone, every day I washed it well, put vetericyn on and rewrapped it. The sixth picture was from today. There is no more bone showing and it is mostly healed over into skin now I have also stopped the antibiotics. From now on I am not wrapping it anymore and am allowing him to heal the rest on his own. He is also back in the coop with his girls now so I'm sure he feels much better already. I also posted a top view and a side view, the red is his feathers not blood. His wound is mostly covered with feathers by now so I don't think I will have a problem with the other birds picking on it. That's it for now I will be curios to see if any feathers will grow out of the new skin.

Aww bless his heart. Poor rooster! So happy to see he is doing well. That sure was a traumatic incident for him!

I had a hen that was smacked by a bear. Two of her flock members were smacked and killed on impact. While I didn’t take her for X-rays, a physical exam felt like her wing was broken or dislocated at the shoulder. It drooped loosely from her body. I was advised to put her down but I wrapped the wing close to her body and by day three of isolation she was stating very clearly she wanted to be with her flock. I started putting her in the coop at night and then putting her in a separate coop in site of the others during the day for another four or so days. I took the wrap off and the wing is definitely lopsided. In fact her whole body looks a little askew, making me wonder if she broke ribs too. She is now at three months post incident. However she can flap her wings and is otherwise healthy. Chickens can make other recovers.

Gail, I’m in a similar situation….how did you amputate the bone? My girl has no new growth, and the bone is pretty long and sharp. I don’t wanna put her back into shock. She’s doing well so far, and it’s been 3 days. Im just worried about the pain I’d cause if I amputated.
thank you so much! 🙏🏽♥️
