My Grandfarther called me, and as you know he has lot of chickens.....Im going to treat it, because he wont use shots, or put anything down their troughts. He said its "sick", and it has basically seperated itself from the flock. He didnt tell me how its sick ext. So either way im thinking respitory? Would you treat this with tylan? Or what? I want it simple and effective.
Thanks

Btw. Im getting it tommorow to start treatment. Either me, or my papa going to put it in a bucket of water....

You can't assume anything. You need to look at the bird. Not all "sick" birds need an antibiotic. Not all sickness is respiratory. Not all respiratory illness requires an antibiotic. A better plan might be to isolate the bird and watch it, see if it eats, mix some vitamins with its water, etc..

Best of luck,
Lynn

Thanks :)! I appreciate it. Ill but some nutri drench and tylan then ill have it there once i determine whats what.

You certainly need to be sure what's going on with the bird first, Mark. I put in my answer, then got a phone call and didn't finish typing, sorry! If it is respiratory and you choose to treat, Tylan is good. You know me, though-I don't ever choose to treat respiratory stuff, so it won't be a great day if it ever happens here. I only use antibiotics for ovarian type infections/egg peritonitis or wounds and the best for that seems to be penicillin-G.

I normally would NEVER treat respitory either. But my grandfarther is getting discouraged for some reason, and i think if he lost another birds he would be out of the hobby, and i cannot have that happen! So im going agaist our similiar opinion to save this bird
But i spend most of my time answering on the disease section i should know what it has when i see it! I just never used tylan or what its used for.
Thanks Cynthia!

Well i saw it. Yup it def respitory. My papa didnt want me to take it. He said once it leaves the flock it will get really beat up after and may never be able to be re-introduced. And ive seen that first hand, the hhens seem to be meaner than the roosters! So hes going to try to do the shots. He said if he gets frusterated hes going to put it down. I told him if he decids to put it down to give it to me, and ill save it. Well see. Im kinda mad though i dont see why he cannot just let me take it, i could do it alot better than him. Not in a mean way, but he always gets discouraged when stuff like this happens. I was with him all day and i told him like 20 times if hes going to put it down give it to me
So the hen is ruffled and not eating. Or pooping. Almost looks paraylzed on one side. Its heavy. No mites or smelly mouth.
I hope he follows through.
