UPDATE!! page 2 hatch under porch in a screen

Ok, I realized there was a little bit more to the move, and so for science here it is.

We put a bunch of hay in a box. Mama#1 and babies were trying to eek out a living on the gravel below the porch. So we brought food and water to the side of the porch. That distracted them and brought them close. It made mama move to get food, it made all the chicks come out from under. That was when we first got a real count and were blown away!

We caught all the chicks and put them in the box with the hay. Lucky for me, mama trusts me and I was able to easily grab her as well. I carried her, and my helper carried the box and we installed them in their new home. (my old chicken tractor)

final count: 13. The weak/wet/cold three seem to have gotten their second chance at life under broody #2, but no other eggs hatched by end of day. So, we called it "done" and took them away, and put her in the dog kennel with the 3. Whew.

Lesson: don't staple screen up under your porch to keep bugs out.
