I quit 2 years ago, 3-21-08, cold turkey. It's not easy, DH still smokes but each days gets easier and they say if you can quit for 2years your chances of smoking again are greatly reduced. I did gain 20lbs, which I'm trying to lose, that is way harder than quitting smoking!!

I read somewhere that the urge to smoke/craving lasted for 3-5minutes and then it's gone. I would just always remember that and think it will go away!! There were many times when I almost fell off, but luckily DH wasn't home and no cigarettes around and I live in the country so it's a 20minute drive into town so that helped me not to! There are alot of people on here who have kicked it or tried and can help you as well! Good luck, it's a hard road but one that will lead you the right way!!

I have tried to quit. I used the Chantix, but it made me so sick I couldn't function. I didn't smoke while it though. I just couldn't deal with being that sick. It has worked for lots of people though, without making them sick. It does stop the craving of wanting one.

gonzo&hispeeps :

Its an embarassing bad habit.

I've heard a lot of reasons to quit smoking, but being embarassed by it is a new one. Why are you embarassed by it? Millions of Americans smoke. If you want to quit because of your health, then good luck and wish you the best, but if you're just quitting because society has made you feel ashamed to smoke, I doubt you'll be able to....

I've smoked since I was 13. In my teen years and early 20s I did quite a bit of other bad things which I've since given all of those up. But I've never tried to quit smoking, and at this point, have no desire to.

I quit smoking from a pack a day to zero with out doing anything just strong will, I know a couple of people who did the same as I did. However I had a big motivation (my kids) the other people had strong motivation also. My sister quit smoking to but she had to use the patch.

I gain 35 pounds after that tho.

I agree with you on the social issue. Peer pressure...lol. Whatever! It doesn't work. I want to quit too, but for my health, not because my pastor hates that I smoke...and he does and has said so and I very much respect his opinion. I love him anyway

although he could NEVER understand why I still light up! I'll quit when I tired of it.

Gonzo....I KNOW how you feel, but it's SO stinkin hard!! For me, with DH laid off for so long...it's just not the time. AT ALL. If you are truly ready to quit I hope you make it! They're expensive and you could use the money for a better addiction...chickens!

Well THAT was certainly an encouraging and helpful post. The sensitivity to human emotions and differences was truly touching.

Smoking is/can be embarassing in this day and age, I have have gone from 3 packs a day to 1, in the last 2 weeks, so far. Major adjustment for me, but I have made some changes. NO smoking inside, no matter how hot or cold it is outside. NO smoking in my truck, I just cleaned it.

I can already feel the difference in my lungs, and I am really making an effort to gradually reduce it to none. DH is doing the same. We are a team, and try not to get mad at one another because of it. I have tried the patches and pills, I had bad reactions to them all. So tapering off is the route for us.

I think painting the inside of the house will really help! It's awful from all the smoke.

Another fine point.... what's less healthy? Smoking or being fat because I will surely be one or the other!

I quit cold turkey from smoking two packs a week. I know it's not a pack a day habit, but it was hard the first few weeks then as I got out of the habit, it really wasnt hard. I do crave when I am drinking but I tried a smoke last summer and thought it was sooooooooooooo gross. Good luck, you CAN do it!!!
