I've heard a lot of reasons to quit smoking, but being embarassed by it is a new one. Why are you embarassed by it? Millions of Americans smoke. If you want to quit because of your health, then good luck and wish you the best, but if you're just quitting because society has made you feel ashamed to smoke, I doubt you'll be able to....

I've smoked since I was 13. In my teen years and early 20s I did quite a bit of other bad things which I've since given all of those up. But I've never tried to quit smoking, and at this point, have no desire to.

Well, the wonderful thing, about smoking is, it kills your sense of smell, so, you never know that anything which cigarette smoke touches, stinks. Even, if only, for a few seconds. Your clothes, hair, house and car, all stink, like a cigarette butt.

I picked up smoking when I was a beautician. All the ladies did it.... so guess who took it up? I do regret it everyday. I would love to quit but I know at this point with 2 teen sons (17 and 19 who by the way drive me insane) I would never get through the stress without a smoke. I'm doing a pack a day and don't wish it on anyone. My DH could quit, no problem, but I know it would take the patience of Job for me to do it. My sons are on us all the time to quit and Lord knows I would like to if for no other reason than financially. But sometimes the vice you know is better than the one you don't, so to speak. I know I have an addictive personality and I'm just not sure if I did quit, what would I take up in it's place. I even had two friends recently die of lung cancer, they smoked all their lives and died in their 70's. You would think that would put the fear in me. But as long as the stress level is as high as it is I don't see it happening. Of course there is power in prayer and I know God wants me to quit maybe I need a prayer chain and support group. I don't know, but I can tell you it's been on my mind alot lately to up and quit. I just don't know.....
I wish you the best on your attempt. I hope you can find your way through it, above it and over it.

I'm not sure that smoking is "a bad habit." I never enjoyed smoking but I was addicted to chewing tobacco. That's just like mainlining nicotine. If you hope to quit, you have to do so for the right reasons. If you can reach the point where you realize that the pleasure you gain is not worth the price or pain you pay, then you are ready to quit. I stopped drinking alcohol 17 years 7 months and 29 days ago, and have no desire to pick up another drink. I quit chewing tobacco 2 and a half years ago, and feel the desire to indulge on a daily basis. I won't chew unless I get some sort of a terminal diagnosis, because it's not worth the trouble it causes. If your motivation is right, you can quit. It is the hardest thing that I have ever done. Good luck. There are even smoking quitting groups similar to AA, but I know nothing about them. Good luck.

Going on 15 years now without smoking. The first couple days are the worst then you really have to work on changing your habits. The smoke after dinner, sitting back relaxing etc was the hardest for me. Once your smell comes back and you can smell a smoker walk past you you have it made then. GOOD LUCK

I quit 11 years ago after smoking a pack a day for 15 years. I quit because I never wanted my son to see me with a cigarrette!
I was also embarrassed that a stinking ciggee had such ahold of me!
First off, I changed my routine! I did everything different so I wouldn't slip back to the same 'ole! I slept 10 minutes later and jumped right in the shower, I washed my hair and used good smelling conditioner so everytime I turned my head, I would get a whiff of YUMMY!
I used the patch at first, then I would only put it on after work and would sleep with it. I would then just use it as needed.
Do whatever you need to do!
Cool for you!

I quit when I was pregnant because it made me physically ill. Later, I ended up starting again - probably due to a high stress job and no time for exercise. But once I decided I really needed to give it up - here is what I did. I finished off a pack, with the exception of one. While I was going through the pack I kept thinking about what I was doing, that it really is an unhealthy bad addiction. It isn't just a habit, it is an addiction. And they put chemicals in the cigarettes that keep you addicted to them. Why do I want to smoke chemicals and ruin my body - it was making me sick and why keep myself in that sick feeling? When I got to the last cigarette I kept it in a ziploc baggie in my purse. I never told myself I could not have it. Rather, I used it as a tool. Every time I looked at it I asked myself "do I really want to be a slave to dried leaves, a paper wrapper, and a filter?" I wanted to be in control of my own life and don't want to be controlled by an inanimate object. I carried that cigarette for a Long time; I never smoked it. Later I was able to toss it away and have not looked back since. I am in control, not a slave to dried leaves. Quite liberating, actually. Best of health and success in overcoming your addiction!!!!

Take up running or go to the gym when you are stressed, it really Will help!!!

Good luck on quitting. It will be two years in two days since I put them down. I did not have any kind of aid to quit. I did it on pure willpower. it was not easy. I had a very nonsupportive spouse who constantly created drama and belittled me. She also constantly smoked in front of me and seemed to make a point to blow the smoke my way. I was always under tremendous stress but I left them alone anyway. If I could do it under those conditions I think anyone can quit.
