Thanks for all the condolences and advice ... Betty's passing leaves us with 7 chickens. I'm going to see how everything goes. Maybe in the spring I'll get some eggs for my girls to hatch.
 
Since your ailment seems to be contagious, you should contact your state veterinarian. They may want to necropsy the body to determine what your chickens were afflicted with and whether it is something the agricultural community needs to be aware of. I had a similar issue earlier this year - fortunately my chick recovered, but I suspected avian encephalitis, which the agriculture department would need to know about (they could only confirm by killing the chick, which I chose not to do) - it could be devastating if there was an AE outbreak in north Georgia, for example, in my case. Please work with your vet or state veterinarian office!
