I dont know what happened she was dead within a few hours so sad ;o(

Aww my little 8 month Cochin has stopped laying stopped moving and stopped drinking. I am so worried for the little gal! Please help. Nothing is leaking out of anywhere and I have pictures. She lets me walk right up to her but when I place her away from the coop she manages to make it up the ladder and then flops back down again in the nesting box. She is breathing with her mouth open. She had a trail of poop on her feathers that was starting to muck up so I washed that with warm water today in a tub to see if there were any bugs or such things. I know nothing about sick chickens so please help thanks!

If there's actually yolk with the poop, she may have layed internally. I've rarely had luck with this problem, but maybe someone here has and has some suggestions. Calcium and Vit D supplements are part of the treatment. I would bring her inside and keep her warm to start. Hope she'll be OK.

Thanks we only have 8 in our some flock she was a good hen.... I just wish I knew what did it :o( All I could think of is a cracked egg in her and she couldnt pass it. Symptoms just started today though so idk any suggestions would be appreciated. So sad she was my first loss too! I guess your skin gets tougher but its still really sad! :'(

I'm so sorry!
One sure way to find out, if you're up to it...
And I don't know, it never gets "easy" with me, esp. when it's a "special" one. Just sayin'

I'm so sorry about your hen.

You mention knowing nothing about sick chickens. A broken egg inside or an eggbound are both emergencies. Try to take the time now to read up on both of these conditions so you will be more prepared next time as unfortunately, it may happen again. It's so difficult when the crisis hits to sort it out in time without a head start. There's a wealth of info here on BYC. You can use the "Search" tab above and type in terms like "eggbound" (stuck egg), "peritonitis" (infection that can come with broken egg inside)... Sometimes even then a problem hits fast and hard and there's no time to save the situation but many times there are signs and symtoms that can be picked up on to save them in time.

What is the diet your hens are on?

My diet for the hens are layer & breeder (southern states) with water and a treat here and there I was told scatter some Crushed corn that I also get in a bag from southern states. I did call 2 vets and all left for the day I called the breeder havent heard back yet and I also called southern states in desperation asking who i needed to talk to and he stated that a chicken specialist was there at the store and his hen is just broody... well I knew that wasnt my girl! So I was at lost after searching blindly through this board (because I have no clue what I was lookign for but matching symptoms) someone stated to clean off her behind and make sure she wasnt ooozing or pasty and another said that if it was a cracked shell she would pass it so I checked on her every hour after the 12 o'clock hour when I saw her mood had changed. It happpened so fast. I just want to protect the other girls next time.

Might be a stupid question but can the BIG rooster of mine crack an egg inside her? Or is that not that easy? If so what should I do with the rooster? Thanks everyone just learning as I go
