UPDATE: We lost her before I could put the swat on her and flush her with betadine. Since I couldn't get to the store the first day, I improvised, and used a mix of hydrogen peroxide and a syringe without a needle, and put antibiotic ointment on. But she stopped eating the second day. Just had no energy to eat even with the food in front of her beak. I am so sad, this is our first chicken we've lost. We just moved here and it's been traumatic to have an animal do this to my chicken.
Will roosters protect hens from these kinds of attacks? We got two roosters right before this happened, I'm hoping once they're old enough, they will attack any ground predators?
My 1 year old Rhode Island Red hen got attacked, we think it was a dog. She is hopping on one leg, most of one wing's feathers are gone, and she has a wound on her back. It doesn't look good, but it doesn't appear to be bleeding right now.
What should I do for her? She is separated from our others right now, and is drinking water. Not sure if she's eaten yet, I'll check in a minute.
Should I give her antibiotics? Different feed? Try to clean the wound with something? We've never had a chicken get hurt before.
The neighbor says to let her be and she'll heal, as long as we keep her from the other chickens till she's better. We can put her in the empty dog run (we have no dog) and give her a cardboard box to sleep in at night. The dog run is fully enclosed so no animals should be able to get to her. Is that good enough at night?
Help!
