I finally had enough of cleaning chicken poop off my backyard patio and constantly sweeping the bark dust back into our landscaping. Our second cycle of laying hens just started to lay so I thought it would be a good time to stop the free ranging but give the new hens room to roam in an attached run. I built this run using the existing fencing and since its an area of dirt, I decided to use straw in the run to keep it from becoming a muddy mess.

Looks great! If you get sick of the straw you can always put in some sand. I live near you and know about all the rain that we get around here! I use sand in my run and it's so much easier to clean up then the mud!

Tell me more about the sand. Do you clean it like you would kitty litter where you just removed the soiled parts and eventually add more?
