UPDATED: What are the survival odds- not good

Hearing about this makes me so mad at the post office. Do they know they may be responsible for killing animals due to their possible inefficiency?

Yep- called Ideal and left a message. Knew this "could" happen, so was at least prepared in my brain for it. I look at it as an opportunity to finish building the bator this weekend and set some eggs.

So the update to this is that 2 of the 7 I ordered made it so far. They look healthy enough. For now. 1 GLW and 1 SLW. Plus, I kept a packing peanut to keep them company and "rule the roost".

I called Ideal and explained that the shipment was a day late AND when I inspected the box more carefully it appeared that a corner of it have been crushed and then "popped back up" to look like it was OK. Most of the DOA chick were in that corner and had some nasal blood discharge. One was outright yucky. Ideal's Customer Service was great and VERY sympathetic. She sincerely sounded upset that that they had dropped or put something on top of the box. They will ship out more chicks when available, but that won't be until it's warmer (possible end of next month) so OK by me!

Now--- onto getting the bator tweaked for eggs. Hoping to have more luck there!

And with your awesome homemade incubators- all the more reason not to have to order live chicks!

How sad. I'm glad Ideal is sending more but I'd be wanting to slap someone at that post office.

I really 'hope' it was a case of someone dropped something by mistake (maybe in the dark?) or someone cut the truck off in traffic and something dropped on your chicks by accident...but they're still dead. Hope the remaining ones are ok.
