A few months ago, my lone mallard was attacked by a hawk, and definitely cried later thst night. He was distraught, silent, and faced the wall for a couple of days, but otherwise fine. We had arranged to pick up 3 Campbell hens the following weekend to give my Prescott proper company, and y'all helped me learn to sex them sucessfully!
Prescott is a wonderful leader and guard for his ladies, who started laying eggs about a month ago!!! He has gone grey around his beak and eyes, I assume due to the hawk attack and staying outside overnight with his ladies all the time now. There was a transition, of course for my baby, during the first weeks the girls spent their days & nights in the coupe, when I brought him in the house to sleep every other night.
We have a rat snake neighbor, Edger, and a king snake who keep away rodents and the copperhead we spotted, in exchange for eggs.
