our favorite bird, clide, is sick. i have been reading on here about the bronchitis and upper respiratory and i am so new to all this my mind is gonig in circles. he is sneezing, wheezing and moaning. i brought him into the garage and fed him scrambled eggs with oatmeal and he had no problem eatting it all. ive added probiotics to his water but cant seem to get him to drink. i keep reading about this Tylan 50 and VetRX but have never heard of them. is it something i can get locally? and can someone explain to me what the uses for each are. i dont typically like to use medications and would really like to stay as natural as possible but he really is our favorite bird and im worried sick right now. i did read on a previous thread about new chickens being introduced. and yes there were 2 new birds about a month ago. could that still have something to do with it. im also worried since clide is our largest bird, and i would think the stongest, do i have to worry about the rest of my flock? do i keep him quarentined? if so , how long? what else can i be doing for him. as much as i swore i wouldnt get attached, he won us over and is completely as bad as our dogs at this point. im exhausted tonight, so could possibbly be over reacting but i knew this would be the first place i would go for help since everyone is so knowledgable on here. any advice would greatly be appreciated. home remedies or anything......

If it's a Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) virus that is causing Clide's symptoms, there is no cure and yes, your other chickens have been exposed because it's contagious.

There are many viruses in the CRD group, but most present similar symptoms: sneezing, wheezing, nasal and eye discharges, and sometimes facial swelling. In the CRD group is respiratory fungus. It's not a virus and it hasn't got the full spectrum of symptoms, usually just affecting the breathing.

If Clide's symptoms are caused by a fungus, you could try a natural home remedy of a vaporizer with either thyme or peppermint. Both of these are anti-fungals, and might give him some relief.

If the symptoms aren't fungal, but bacterial, then you'll need to find some Tylan. You might be able to find it at TSC. I'd phone around and ask.

Do you have a video of him? I don't think I've ever had anyone describe a chicken moaning before. Have you looked inside his beak for any obstruction?
Does he have any mucous coming from his nostrils?

Respiratory symptoms can be caused by a number of things - Respiratory Illness is probably the most common, but poor ventilation, mold, ammonia from droppings and extremely dry dusty bedding/feed can also be contributing factors.

Infectious Bronchitis, Mycoplasma, Infectious Coryza and ILT are a few of the more common respiratory illnesses. Tylan50 is an antibiotic that can be used to treat secondary infections from respiratory illnesses - it is more effective with Mycoplasma or Infectious Coryza since these are bacterial illnesses. Infectious Bronchitis and ILT are viral, but antibiotics may give some relief if there is complications with infections. If he worsens, then seeking vet care is always best - if that's not possible, you can try the Tylan50 to see if it makes a difference.

VetRX is a "natural" remedy for use in livestock - the only thing I could compare it to would be Vicks Vapor Rub. A lot of people do try this first.

Adding new birds can bring risks. Birds can look and act healthy but be carriers of illness. There is really no way to tell unless testing is performed. If you do happen to lose Clide, then sending him for necropsy/testing would be a good idea - this will give you more information.

Do your best to keep him drinking - hydration first, then eating.
Keep us posted.

thankyou both so much. i will be making a special trip to find tylan 50 and vetRX, just in case. i should probably have already had them. oh i so hope it isnt CRD or anything too serious. i keep a very clean coop but i will say am struggling bad with the drafts and cold nights. we will for sure be working in there tomorrow, even if i need to put the old man on a leash to get him out there to help! i might call tomorrow as well and see if there is any local vets that treat poultry.....

I hope you find a good vet. The only all-creatures vet that I have ever had to contact, wasn't responsible at all. I took a poop sample in for a fecal float test, and they didn't perform the test with my once fresh sample until 5 days later.

I hope Clide recovers soon.

How often and where should the vaporizer be used? Maybe put him in a small bathroom?

I would place him in a confined space like a pet carrier, and place the vaporizer just outside the crate nearest to his head. Turn it on and drape a bath towel over the crate so as much as the steam as possible can permeate his space. Of course, leave an opening for proper air circulation. I'd leave him in the crate overnight with the vaporizer going.

Oxine is an anti-fungal, and it can kill fungal spores. It's the specified treatment for such ailments. That is what I would use in th vaporizer if it can be found. Amazon does have it. https://www.amazon.com/Bio-Cide-International-Oxine-Gallon/dp/B000HT7H8W

So glad to hear that Clyde has recovered!:)

I agree with @azygous If you don't mind, giving us a rundown of your treatment method will be most helpful to us and to future readers that come across your thread for help.
