I have 2 RIR roosters that I have to re-home. It's breaking my heart but I have 4 roosters and 8 hens and the poor little hens are being marauded by the raging rooster hormones.

They are 17 weeks old and they are production RIR that came from TSC. They are very healthy, beautiful boys and I don't want to get rid of them, but I have to for my little hens sakes.

I would like to have anything you offer to help offset the cost of the food and time I have put in them. But please, they must be for pets, not for eating. If I could stand for them to be eaten, I'd eat them myself.

It's silly, but I'm so sad I have to get rid of them. They are hand fed and follow me like puppies. They are also the first chickens I've ever had, so perhaps that's why it's so hard.

Actually if someone would give them a good, loving home they can have the roosters for free.

Hi Susan,

I'm downstate in Hollywood, south of Charleston. I ran an ad for free roosters on Craig's List and rehomed 11 that way!

All went to homes where they were not to be eaten, but I do know that it might have happened anyway. But I had to tell myself that once someone has the roo it is no longer my choice.

Good luck, I know I need it too, I have 16 roos right now!

Thanks, Ranchand.

I thought I would try here and maybe the feed store for a few days before resorting to craigslist. However, if they are not gone by Friday that's what I'll do.

I hear you about once someone gets it they can decide what to do with them. I don't want them eaten, but then since this is my first flock, I am not really doing what chickens were meant to do-provide food for humans.

16, wow! I wish I had room for that many myself LOL But I'm on a 3/4 acre in the town limits.

I do have one rule- all roosters are to be picked up from me in a humane and gentle manner- somebody tries to hold one by his feet, no crate or box? That roo isn't leaving, but the somebody is!

When someone calls, I chat for a while, to get a feel for them and their intentions. If it doesn't feel right, I might put them off. But as I said, I have no control once they leave my property.

That's why I have hung up my incubator. Too many roos, I am a rooster magnet!
