My wife and I have recently jumped through all of the hoops to be permitted to have four hens in the Electric City limits. We are looking to stock our new coop with some layer hens. She likes Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks, but we are novices and can be convinced to go with a perferred breed for South Carolina. We would prefer to pick them up locally (between Charlotte and Atlanta). Not prepared for chicks, but young hens OK. I'm Adjunct at Clemson and UNCC and she is into rubber stamps and altered books. We often meet in the backyard with our two dogs, Maggie and Katie, who are anxiously awaiting our birds as they chase the squirrels away from our pecan tree. What can we raise in our garden to feed our chickens?

Welcom to BYC. Go to the "Social" forum and click on 'Where am I? Where are you!', locate your state thread and perhaps somewhere there local can help you locate some birds. The breeds that you mention are excellent and hardy birds.
