It's a slippery slope owning chickens. Very quickly you could own more than your originally planned. I got my chicks from Murray McMurray sexed so that I knew exactly what I was getting. I thought about the straight run, but I learned that quite often that S.R. tend to be more cockerels.

Where are you keeping the chickens now until you build one?
When I bought the property I'm on now, I had no idea but there was a 20 x 20 foot dog pen just east of the house. I discovered it when I started clearing the land. It's the current coop and has 1 hen house, and one smaller house in it.

Tell me about it. The plan was no more than a dozen hens for the family 10 years ago. Fast forwards to now, I alone have almost 100 and my mom has 2


If you're looking for ones you don't have to raise yourself, Look into Standard phoenixes. I have 6 hens and 1 male (not counting the 2 hatchery pullets since they haven't started laying yet) and all have started to brood or have successfully brooder a nest this summer already
