I was awoken a couple of times last night by our dog barking at something out front. It turns out it was for good reason. We woke up to a duck slaughtered on the front lawn! What kind of predator would have done this? There have been reports of coyotes on this side of town and we know there are raccoons in the neighborhood. Or is it something else?

There are feathers everywhere, blood all over the side walk, and chunks of feathers with flesh in different spots. The carcass was left away from the blood, but really chewed apart, especially around the neck and back.

This was about 10 feet away from the area with all the blood and feathers.

I live in a large urban city, but we are not far from a river, a big regional park, and another city park that connects to it with a duck pond.

Ducks frequent our front yard and street many times throughout the day. They like the bugs and cover in the yards and neighbors down the street feed them. Thank goodness it was not one of my pet chickens, but I saw this friendly duck daily so it is still very disturbing.

Oh wow, how terrible. I love ducks and have some myself. I don't know what to tell you about which animal would have done that. I'm sure someone else will tell you though. Poor little duck.

Now you've got to keep a REAL close eye on your chickens. Keep safe.

coyote or snake . a coyote seems more likely, but see how the neck looks like it was swallowed, but then regurgitated. . the neck looks very similar to several snake attacks ive seen on baby chickens

not a coyote, in my opinion. A coyote will grab and kill an animal, then take it back away from where it would be seen and EAT it. No way it would leave it laying there.

I don't know anything about raccoons, etc but like others said, a dog playing with it seems like a viable possibility.
