I am praying for them both...
hits close to home... My hubby is ast. fire cheif and nephew junior fireman... I used to be a firefighter until I got hurt at work and can no longer do it(all volunteer) ... we have never had anything like that happen here and I hope it never does...Keep us posted

I feel like Deja Vu. Firstly I will pray for these men. Tonight I got a call from a paid solicitor for the Fraternal Order of Firefighters. As usual he got his two sentences out, mentioned the death of the Figherfighters in Rowen and how we had to support them before I hung up on him. Now don't get mad at me. I DO support the firefighters.

I just can't stand the paid solicitors. I asked once how much of my money was going to the firefighters and was told 12%. I have never given one a dime since then. Occasionally the Fraternal order of FF, or Police will call directly and I always donate, they have to reveal if they are paid solicitors. If not I will either send my money directly to the organization, or give it to my local fire dept when they come directly to my door in the fall and spring - they are partly volunteer, partly paid.

In our community the Fire Dept is a meeting place. We vote there, we get our family pictures done there, we have pancake breakfast there etc. I can not imagine if one of our boys was hurt.

No word so far, I can't find anything at all about this anywhere in the news locally.

I have no idea of what's happened, and ds can't find out until tomorrow when he can call the station. (He's asleep, this all really stressed him out.

Chixie,
We're all volunteer out here, except for Salisbury City. We hadn't had anything happen like that since 1973 before Vic and Justin last March 08. These guys are all very close knit, and it hurt the entire area for a long time. You still see "In Memory" stickers all over cars now.

Lanie,
I do NOT blame you at all!

In fact, I have no idea where you are in NC, but am very interested in the fact that the paid soliciters are bringing up Vic and Justin...I wonder if thier families know about this??

I'm going to ask a close friend about that tomorrow.
All I will say is that this goes directly against what these men were about. Thank you for bringing this up and thank you SO much for the prayers!!

and thank you for praying!! Key WEst, I do understand what you mean about sleepless nights, ds turns 18 in December, and I'm sure I'm going to have a lot of those myself after he goes on active duty. This is his true passion, it just scares me to death...

Baltimore,

I'm in Southern Franklin County. Yah it burned my butt too, like it was supposed to guilt me into giving. "As you know we lost two brave men in North Carolina this year"... I wanted to slap him. Like everyone in the state doesn't know when any firefighter or police man or woman goes down. We've lost a LOT of them this year.

When we give here in Franklin county though its personal. We don't give because some Yahoo on the phone makes us feel guilty, we give because one of the guys or girls from the Pilot fire house down the road knocks on the door and lets us know the defibrilator is getting a bit old, or there is a new training seminar they would like to go too, or Randy's in the hospital etc. There will be a Jar on the counter at Murphy's or at the Pilot Gas station, or an Appreciation day. Let's not forget Thanksgiving day Pancakes!

I grew up in Boston, where things are different and your tax dollars just pay for everything. Then I moved to a suburb, ya'll may know of Foxboro Mass. Where the boys were Volunteer. Many of my HS friends were out there putting out fires on the weekend.

In Delaware, you have to Purchase a Membership in the Bloodbanks, and pay a fee to the local Ambulance Companies to be on the route etc. At least you did where and when we lived there.

In Richmond, we had Volunteer Fire and Ambulance again and we always took care of our guys and gals.

But here in NC, it is SO much more. The Fire Dept is the center of the community. THey know you and you know them.

My brother was a volunteer fire fighter. He died of lung cancer. The Honor Guard stood by his casket during the services. His last trip on a fire truck was when they took his ashes to the graveyard.

The solicitors have been calling here too for the last 3 days. It's coming up as NCFFA on caller ID. I won't give to them. But the guys on the street corners with their boots and buckets, selling Kryspy Creme donuts, or bad chicken BBQ dinners. I'm the first in line.

Let us know when you hear something.
