URGENT! 38Chicks alive,all SHRINK WRAPPED,Day24!*UPDATE* 1chick dead)=

If there is blood in the membrane than do not hatch the babies!!!!! They can and do bleed to death. I would help the chicks zip the shell like they normally would. Find the airsak by candleing and zip the area very slowly and carefully in a circle with tweezers so that there is a "top" that can come off. This will make sure they have air to breath and should keep them alive while they absorb the blood from the membrane and absorb the yolk. After zipping them, wrap them in a wet washcloth or paper towel (washcloths hold moisture better) and put them back in the bator making sure they can breath. At that point they should be able to hatch the rest of the way themselves. Give them time, lots of it. If you try and hurry them actually coming out of the shell and they are still attached to the membrane at the bottom they will bleed, even if it looks like they have absorbed the blood from the top part of the membrane. Good luck! There is a great sticky in this forum about helping a hatch, it is very helpful. Good luck!

At this point you are going to have to help them out. Once they get shrink wrapped they simply cannot get out by themselves. If you tear away some of the membrane does the blood come out in drops, or like a stream? A few drops of blood will not hurt, but if it's a steady stream it will kill them pretty quick. Have you gotten one out yet to see how bad it will bleed or to see if the yolk is 100% absorbed?

I hadn't read this when I left my last reply, DO NOT TEAR THE MEMBRANES! They should have internally pipped, if they have not leave them be. You can tell if they have pipped internally by candleing them and seeing the beak in the airsak. If you see this you can help zip them, ONLY around the airsak where the membrane is not attached.

Ok, the blood mainly drips unless torn a great deal, just incase I was doing more harm than good I only got one of the chick's membrane tore & his head out so he coud breath. His head/neck is now out & he is breathing, but his head was not in a position to where he could pip if he wanted to, his feet weren't 1st but his head/beak wasn't right at the airsac like I imagined. So should I zip all the eggs since they are shrink wrapped then just put a wet washcloth around them until they absorb their blood/yolk?

I just dealt with 1 of these this morning. Actually it was over the past two days. The chick had not pipped. Didn't even think it was alive. So I opened it at the air sac and no bleeding and saw it was moving. Put it in bator and kept membrane moist. It was able to break through membrane. But was shrink wrapped by this morning. There was a tiny bit of blood when membrane was torn, but I would let it rest and continues a little bit at a time. The worst part was the very thin clear membrane that was on the chick that just moistening did not help. I had to kind of wipe it away. When I first started this chick was almost stiff, but still cheeping. When I finished it was still partly attached to the shell and I let it get itself off the shell, which it did nicely. As a matter of fact I was soon able to return it to momma hen as soon as it fluffed up. It's adorable and I know it wouldn't have made it if I hadn't help as we've just had the same thing happen 2 days ago, but I let it go too long. Good luck

Since I knew all the eggs were shrink wrapped, I opened all of their shells at the airsac-none of them had pipped yet. All of them but one was still alive & it died earlier in development. Also, all of the chicks have quite a bit of blood left & I quickly found out there's no way I could seperate them from the egg-too much blood loss. I individually wrapped a wet piece of thin cloth around every egg so what's next? Keep checking them until their blood/yolk is absorbed then help or let him hatch themselves?

I have been reading your posts with great anticipation. Good luck with them, sounds like you have been given advice by those that are in the know. Gonna be a long night for you. Let us know how they do and how you did it. It will be a great resourse to those of us that ever have to face your situation.

Bad news, the one chick with his membrane opened & head out died so now I know that at this stage they are not ready to hatch...I guess just keep checking on them to see when they're ready have everything absorbed.
