Urgent***Broken Leg, no feeling in toes. Cull or amputate?

He is in a rubbermaid container too, LOL. He doesn't mind it so much as long as he can see his girls. I put him out in the yard in it during the day so he can see them. He even crows in it, cracks me up.

His foot just looked terrible, it was off color, not like it was dead, but just didn't look right. I pinched his foot in several places and he didn't respond at all so I thought it may have some nerve damage. I quicked a couple of toe nails to check for blood circulation and they bled well so I knew he was getting blood to his foot. His lower leg was quite swollen, but he has been on antibiotics and anti inflamitories since I splinted it saturday. The open wound looked to have some infection starting, but it is closed now and looking good. I didn't realize his leg was broken at first. I picked him up and looked at the bottom of his foot expecting bumble foot. I saw the beginning of bumble foot so I thought thats what it was. Brought him in the house to take care of that and saw the break upon further examination. I'm glad to hear of other stories similar to mine with a "healing" outcome. I'm sure he will never gain full function, but he will have a life.

I had the same thing happen to my hen. We went away for the weekend and had someone watch them and everything but when we got home I found a dead hen ( Millie ) and her sister ( Minnie ). She was on her side stuck in a nocked over nesting box. She and her sister had been attacted by a neighbor hood dog. She also had 4 puncture wounds. She lived in the house for a little over a month, in her box in the living room. I made sure to put neosporin on her wounds and wrapped up her leg up real good. At first she walked with a limp and basically had to learn to walk again but soon was back to running around in the yard with the rest of the flock. When bad weather comes rolling in ( just like in a human who has had a broken arm ) It gets a little stiff and she has a little of a limp, but it has gotten better over time. She had one wound right under her wing and caused some nerve damage so she holds her wings out a little bit but it's nothing horrible. I hope the best for you rooster, I am sure he will make a full recovery

He is doing great. I've got him in a small dog crate. He can stand up in it and move, but can't really "walk" around. He is splinted up still. He can move his toes and I think function will be pretty close to normal once the leg bone heals. I will move him into my old quail pen in a week so he has more room. I don't think I will remove the splint for at least another month just to be safe. He is doing great! I'm so glad I splinted instead of culling. It just goes to show, always at least give them a chance if the chance is there. I was really doubtful that foot would be any good, I was wrong on that one. I'll post a pic of him here in a minute.

Oh btw, FeaganFarm is my hubby's log on when I loose my password for this one. Which happens. Alot. haha

One morning I went to feed my chickens, and discovered one of my babies (3 mos old) missing a leg. Just like that. Not even a stump. A raccoon must have reached through the wire at night (she was sleeping in the run) and grabbed her leg. I took her to the vet, got her wound stitched up and she is doing great !! She hops around with no problem. Needless to say, she and her flock are in a new coop with 1/4 inch wire for the run, and a hen house that she can easily hop into. So good luck to your rooster, I think he will be just fine.

I had the same questions when a chick ran under the moving chicken-tractor and I set it down on her leg. Well she hopped away on one foot so fast that I immediately decided that she probably didn't need to be culled if she could get around that well on one leg

It was an open compound fracture (bone sticking out of leg) but with her being so young, she healed up super-fast. I kept her in a dog crate like yours, and kept her outside with her broodermates in sight so she wouldn't be too lonely. She was walking with a slight limp after only about 10days so at that point I let her out with her buddies, for a couple of weeks she was slower than the others, but later on I never could figure out which one it was!!! No limp at all!! She totally amazed me!

I culled my white rock today.
I'm an avid waterfowler and I know I'll get grief for being a hunter, but my point is I've never felt so down about killing a bird.

Long story short.
I was out of town, dad stopped in to check the birds. He sent me pictures of one of the girls pecked bloody.
I had him put her in a crate away from the flock.
I got home to find a gash above her tail. Her whole back and head were bloody. And she had a broken leg.

I couldn't see her recovering or ever joining the group again. It broke my heart.
I took her out instantly.

I burried her under our mulberry tree.

R.I.P Maverick.
