Hello,
I have a Bantam Hen that is about a year old. She was healthy, laying eggs, and friendly until we had a fox attack in March. She had a cut on her underbelly/thigh area and survived the attack. We cleaned the wound, put antibiotics on it and it healed (or so I thought). I had checked it this summer a few times, it was a Hard scab that I couldn’t remove from the feathers surrounding it, but she was acting just fine.
I think at one point this summer she did lay an egg, but I’m not 100% positive.
The last week has been different, she runs out of her. Coop in the morning to the same shrub and sits under it most of the day. I started to notice there was an odor of feces or something. Yesterday I determined it was her and found the wound was MUCH MUCH larger and has some yellow (egg-yolk like substance) in the wound. I soaked her in a warm peroxide/water bath for 20 minutes, she loved it. I was able to clean the feathers away from the wound, clean up any dirt and feces from the area, and some of the yellow chunks removed. I dried her, trimmed the feathers back, and she was a happy camper.
Here is my question:
1. Is this puss?
2. Can/should I scoop out that puss and put more antibiotics in it as long as its not hurting her?
3. Can this be treated or cured with salves? Or something I can buy over the counter?
4. Once I clean it, do I need to stitch it? Remember this opening/wound is six months old, and somehow made it this far or re-opened.
Photo attached (probably the grossest Chicken Puss photo I’ve seen on the internet!). Photo of her poop attached too, since that seems fairly normal (I think).
Any guidance on what I can do to help her would be appreciated. She’s very tame, I can also take more photos if needed.
I will not be bringing her to a vet, there are none in the area and I refuse to pay thousands of dollars for an exotic pet vet for care.
