It is day 30 of my broody bantam sitting on a Khaki Campbell egg. (Three others had to be disposed of over time; the third one today at first light)

Tapping sounds since day 28 and definate, loud (!) peep-peeps today in the remaining egg.

Problem: Henny has had enough and is no longer sitting on the egg

I'm very concerned! Don't know if it is because I removed the dud egg first thing and its simply upset her somehow, but, she hasn't returned to the nest (now 4hrs ago!)

Options available:

1) Just leave things alone and hope for the best.

2) Remove the egg and put it in the brooder pen to hatch on its own (at least it will have heat and humidity in there); except, the brooder pen has a 2 1/2 wk old KC duckling already in there

Any and all advice gratefully received.

TIA

Ok, have had to resort to Option 2 too much time is passing without a warm body to keep that egg viable.

So, now my 2 1/2 week old duckling is sitting on a hatch-any-time-if-we're-lucky egg in the brooder pen

Pogo tends to sit in her teatowel 'doughnut' nest most of the time and the egg is sited in the centre of the doughnut. Pogo is happily sitting in her doughnut but is obviously having a "Princess and the Pea" moment! Lets see what the next 48hrs bring; if anything.

You mean .... like these ones?

(Please excuse the "haze", heated plastic walls tend to do that

Pogo: "Hmm, looks like my doughnut"

Pogo: "Wait up!! This doesn't feel like my doughnut!"

Pogo: "You pulling a fast one on me, Mum? Huh? If I give you stink eye ... will you tell me what's going on? "

Pogo: "Now what the heck is that? Can I eat it? Can-I-can-I-huh-huh?"

Pogo: "Ooookay, that'll be a non-edible pea then?"
idunno.gif

Pogo: "Guess I'll just have to sit and wait nicely for Santa to reveil my present. Then can I eat it?"

Now, we sit and wait and hope. If it hatches, it will be called Hope; if it develops into a drake, it will be called Bob (Hope).

That is so funny, and cute too. And i like both names, i have a Muscovy named Hope, but no Bob.

UPDATE:

Ok, so, today (now day 31!) and the little thing hadn't emerged.

Read the sticky on assisting hatch and followed that advice - only to notice, apart from its beak, the rest of it was shrink wrapped
sad.png
But, it was still making noises.

So, using a baby syringe, I pumped (gently) warm water between the shell and the membrane to soften it. But the little thing was weak. I tried setting it up in a smaller dish with the light on it, but it wasn't really keeping it warm enough. The current situation is: I have a duckling in my bra!

So, what else could I do?

It's been there 30 minutes now and is getting more active as the minutes pass
