URGENT DE question (Food Grade)

I have six chicks arriving Tuesday (hopefully) from MPC express mail.

Ca I put DE in their box I have set up for their arrival. I was going to Pet some DE down first, then paper towels.

I add it to their pine shaving (in the brooder when I re-set it up) then just put the paper towels over top of the shavings. We've noticed that since adding food grade DE to the brooder litter that it has really helped with keeping the chickeny smell down.
