Hatching

Hello, sorry for not introducing but this is my first post and i need help.

I have seven eggs under my broody hen and now five have hatched but two are still unhatched. One of those two has a piping hole and was peeping and moving. I went out this morning and came back home to find the hen and chicks away from the eggs and the pipped egg was cold. But when i checked it the chick was still moving and peeping a little but it was weak.

Let me just add that the pip hole was there since last night so it's been about 18 hours since piping. But now the hen won't sit on them. I've brought them in and placed them in a bowl with a damp tissue and then placed that bowl in to a bigger bowl of warm water and covered it all with a towel.

The pipped chick has brightened up considerably and is now peeing a lot more but I'm wondering if I need to help or doing anything else? This has never happened before, usually they all hatch together.

Thanks in advance. I'm really worried.

Welcome to BYC! So sorry you have a problem. 18 hours is normal, they can take up to 24 to start zipping. Do you have a heating pad w/o a automatic off and an accurate thermometer? You might be able to put that over the top instead of the towel and boost its chances. You did the right thing, and good thinking. Good luck!! :fl

Edit: Temp should be 99-100°, just in case you didn't know.

Thankyou for your fast reply. :) Unfortunately i don't have a heating pad and the only other heat source i can think of is the incubator i used on a previous set of eggs last year but the heat lamp is broken so it's useless. :( For now though I guess it's a waiting game then and the chick is still loudly chirping from the egg.

BTW, good job not just rushing in and helping like too many others do. Keep us updated on progress!

Thanks :) I've kept it nice a toasty in there and the chick is still very noisy. When I checked on her a minute ago the pipping hole had gotten bigger :D Unfortunately no sign of anything from the other unhatched egg still :/ and this is like day 24.

awesome!!!!!

Okay update- Everything is okay so far. The chick is hatching now properly and making sounds whenever she's not trying to crack the egg. :D Thanks for all the help, looks like it's going to be okay. One question I do have though is, how do I get the chick dry? The hen did it for the others but she won't sit still anymore.:( She's all over the place with the other chicks.

Just keep the chick where she is now?
