HI,

I am located near georgetown Indiana and desperately need a bird put down anyone on here that may be able to do it?

Yeah...you.

Grab the bird by the feet. Lay the bird on the ground. Place a broomstick across its neck. Stand on the broomstick with all your weight and pull upwards on the bird's feet. You can either give a quick, hard yank or a slow, consistent pull until you feel the neck separate. I like to pull slowly to ensure that I don't mess it up by yanking the bird out from under the broomstick without achieving the desired result. It is done. There will be some flapping, but it is just nervous reaction and means nothing. The flapping should stop in under a minute.

Euthanization is one of the toughest parts of poultry keeping, but it is a necessary skill to have. Cervical dislocation is the quickest method of dispatch, and this particular method is bloodless. You can do this.

Good luck.

Thats what husbands are for! I couldnt do it myself either. But a Vet would probably do it for free since it would only be like 2 cc's of Euthanol to do it. We do it for pidgeons and crows, ducks every once and a while at the clinic I work for.

If you don't want to do it yourself, call a vet. Why won't your dad do it?

Strange to me. It's an unfortunate necessity when you own chickens.
