Hi All,

Over The Last Month I Have Been And Bought 2 Silkie Chickens From The Local Market, I Have Been A Little Worried Because She Has Had A Dioreah Over The Last 2 Weeks And Thought This May Be Down To A Change In Food Or Somthing.

Well I Came Home Today And It Looks Like My Chickens Inners Anr On The Outside Where Shes Been Straining (like Piles)

If Anyone Can Help And Tell Me What I Should Do Then That Would Be Great As Im New To All This Im A Little Scared

Thank You

You are describing a prolapse. The first thing to do is isolate her in dark/low light location then read the following thread carefully (also read dlhunicorn's links on page three of the thread. Just about every possible treatment is in this thread and those links).

This is a difficult problem to resolve successfully, but keep posting and let us know how it goes.

Good luck!

You'll want to put her in a nice, quiet spot, beforehand, clean the area with warm water, you're gonna lather the insides and vent with preparation H and then gently push her "insides" back...I know, sounds weird, but this does often work. Do it again for the next couple days if it continues to pop out. Make sure she has plenty of food and water available and let her rest. Good luck!!!

She may have prolapsed because of the diarrhea, or she may be having diarrhea because she is egg bound (stuck egg) and the prolapse happened secondary to that.

Are you a young person? Can you get an adult involved here? I am thinking you may be a teen or younger due to your posting style- if you are an adult, please forgive the assumption.

This is a serious problem for a beginner to deal with- I HIGHLY recommend either finding a local experienced chicken mentor to help you or bring this bird to a vet who will see birds. You need someone with experience to see this bird.

Hi First Of All Im 25, Im Just New To This And Worried!!

No Offence Taken Though

She Has Been In The Bath For A Little While Now Ive Emptied The Water But Keep Washing Her Of With The Shower (on Low Pressure) She Is Pooing Alot But Its Not Dioreah As Such

Now Ive Got Prep H But Its Got That Stuff In It Thats Not Good For Checkens Or So I Just Read?? I Gently Put Preasure On The Bulg And Boy She Clucked

Ive Got Pictures But No Idea How To Post Them On Here,

I Read On That Link They Had To Kill The Bird Sure Hope I Dont Have To Do That!!

Read Dlhunicorn's links on page three of the thread (sadly, this is a difficult problem) I hoped you'd read what can be done as the standard treatments are listed in the thread.

I'm hoping for the best

Your doing a great job. Try the Preparation H again. Apply a little around the vent and if you can (with a gloved finger or plastic bag on your finger) put a little inside. It should help the swelling go down. Put her in a box or whatever you have and put her in a warm, quite spot to rest. Make sure you dry her off really well from the bath so she won't get a chill. Talk to her softly and a hair dryer on low can help dry her.

Make sure she has water and food and plenty of old clean rags to lie on. Because her appetite is off make her a scrambled egg....cool it off and see if she will eat it.

Good luck. I'm sure others will comment also. Keep us informed

I Have Just Pushed The Bulge/egg Back Inside And She Pushed It Back Out, Ive Used Vaseline As I Thought This Would Be Safer As The Prep H Has That Chemical In It?? Ive Read That Much Tonight I Can Rember Names!! Im Keeping Her In The House Tonight To See What Happens.

She Still Seems Ok Not Shying Away But She Tries To Jump Out The Bath When I Go Anywhere Near Her Vent Area,

Ok Just Put Her In A Snake Vivarium, Well Cleaned And No Snake!! Its A Dark Place And All The Lights Are Off- Shee Does Seem To Have Settled A Little Although The Bulge /egg Is Still Out Shes Vaseline'd Up And Im Just Hoping It Will Pass.

Where are you located? I still think connecting with a chicken mentor in person would be good. We can't tell from the computer seat what you are trying to push back in. If it is an egg, and it can be reached from the outside with a finger into the vent- it can be broken to help her push it out more easily. If she has a mass on the inside (not an egg) that is a different story. If you are in the US and close to a city, you may be able to connect with someone via Craig's list. The BYC people are spread all over the world, and you may have someone in the same town as you that can help you out? Or take your bird to a vet- let them sort it out (bring a fecal sample to have checked for parasites- a common cause of diarrhea).

I thought you were a kid as you write with each word starting with a capital letter- I Find It Hard To Read Sentences Like This, As My Mind Keeps Inserting Breaks.

Prolapses sadly, do often end in the culling or death of the bird. It prolapsed for a reason- and if the reason is not just a egg that happened to randomly to be too big, it will likely happen again. It is unfortunately a fairly common problem with laying hens. Less common in silkies- they spend half of their time being broody.
