So I have had my duck egg for 29 days now and when candling up until day 26 there was movement in the egg, veins and everything was going fine . Since then there has been no movement and it is day 29 now. What do I do now? I’ve left it in lockdown still, haven’t touched it, temps are at 36.5 give or take 0.5 degrees . What’s the next step ? Do I open the egg? Do I leave it a bit more ? I’m real confused and need some help .

Something I’ve noticed about the egg , since day 27 , I can see like the tip of the egg opposite the side where the air sac is, i can see it’s going like a light shade of black without candling it , anyone know what this means?? I need some help ASAP!

Welcome to BYC! I am not a duck expert, but I have heard when a patch of the shel gets darker that means the baby is malposistioned and ready to come out, but stuck. Not seeing movement towards the end of incubation is normal. The baby is too big to move around. If I were you I would put a safety hole on the shell over the air cell in case baby is suffocating. Hopefully a duck person will help you with the next steps.

I'm a bit of a newbie, but from what i understand, the safety hole is a good idea. Also, we just had a duckling hatch after 35 days, when we thought it was dead, so never give up hope! (It's not in the greatest of shape, but hoping for the best)

Thanks for the reply , can I ask how would you recommend I create a small hole in the air sac ?

Duck eggs generally take 30-35 days. You can simply use athe drill head the gently drill a safety hole. But you have to be careful doing so. If it is malpositioned the leg can easily get stuck in said safety hole (that happened to me). In wich case it most likely will need help. And it is likely to develop respiration issues. It could also be malpositioned because there is already something wrong with it. Like malformation, disfiguration, heart issues. So if it does hatch out, look for those things.

What day shall I help the baby get out? I’ve created a hole on the side where the air cell is that’s about 1cm diameter

After the first pip, chicks and ducklings can go a few days without eating. If it has already pipped (in the wrong or right area) and isn't making noticable progress that normal chicks and ducklings do (it can take over a day for normal eggs to fully hatch to) then you can help it along a little. But be careful, and only do a little at a time. If it bleeds, don't continue at that moment (quik clot can help if it does) because if it bleeds then that means that the chick isn't ready. And if you can, only pick at the shell thats along the predicted zip line the chick/duckling would make it's self, it will more likely help it get out at it's own strength. Als look out for shrink wrapping, if the membrane gets to dry it will prevent it from getting out, in wich case you will definitely need help. Though as for the specifics of safely helping it, if you look up assisted hatching, you should be able to find a page on it here in this forum.
