GlicksChicks
Crowing
Hello all,
I hatched out 30 chicks on January 30th. A mixed batch all from my egg laying flock.
Yesterday, Febuary 1st, my FIL called me into the room they were in temporarily and told me a chick was down. Thought it was dead. I checked it and it was dead in front of their heat plate. I picked it up and found that on the side of the head facing down, the eye was bloody.
There were no sharp points in the box they were in. They have a heat plate that has all rounded areas, no sharp edges to stab. Their feed and water things were round lids, no corners or points. And their bedding was an old towel.
(Dead chick from yesterday, the eye.)
So, thinking they were maybe stressed on space, I moved them to their larger brooder. This morning I found the chick I am making this post about laying on it's stomach with it's head sideways and it's bloody eye hidden. I thought it was dead until I saw it breathe.
(How it was laying. This is not in the brooder, it is on the lid after I moved it.)
This one's eye is even worse than the one that was already dead.
(Pictures of it's bloody eye.)
The thing I find most odd is that the chick that is dead and this one are both Buff Orpingtons. The chicks in the brooder are either buffs, BCM mixes, SLW mixes, black sexlink mixes, or golden sexlink mixes. There were only 6 BO chicks. Now 5 with 1 not doing good.
What do I do about this chick? Does it have a chance?
I made a little cocktail of things that would hopefully give the baby a boost. Vitamins, Electrolytes, honey, egg yolk, and Grapefruit seed extract.
The chick is now housed seperately with it's own heat plate.
