URGENT~ SOFT SHELLED EGGS AND A LETHARGIC DUCK!!!

Pics
Wow, I just wanted to step back and agree that Nicole has quite a load on her shoulders. I am grateful to everyone for sharing the very good technical information - it will help many people, I am sure (already has me thinking about having gavage equipment on hand).

Quackers is eating worms, anyway.I think the idea of being able to closely monitor her weight is a good one. At this point, I wonder if a smoothy of corn might be worth a try. Nicole, does she like corn? I am not big on feeding that, but it is calories. And keep up with the worms, at least she is eating those.

And then some vitamins in her water to help round out her nutrients. Silly duck. I suspect she is feeling awful and just wants comfort food. When my beloved had Lyme, all he could eat was a little brown rice with a little cheese and a duck egg, in olive oil. This reminds me of that - recovering from a serious illness, his doctor said "feed him whatever he will eat."

A chat with the vet, perhaps making sure you have a syringe (I got some from the baby aisle in the drugstore), and finding some very nutritious stuff you can get into her either in her water, or as a slurry, plus the worms . . . weekend will be here before you know it.

Any word on Dr. Whittington?

And, Nicole, listen to your inner wisdom on this. There are several people here who care about you two. I value their opinions and their instincts. And this is between you and Quackers. I feel that at this point, you have been provided with a wide range of information and ideas to sort through.

I can identify with the feeling of not wanting to put a pet through any more uncomfortable, even scary treatments. Have a chat with Quackers and see where you might want to say to yourself, "at such and such a point, I will need to consider tube feeding." I think I also understand how you feel about your feathered friend.

I am calling around to find the poultry vitamins. I already tried oatmeal and she didn't want it. I also tried straight baby food and she wouldn't without the worms in it.

I will go to the store to see if they have the Flora Gen 3. Thanks

Find some sardines packed in water with no salt added. Offer those to her and check your feed. I wonder if there may be something up with that. Do you have a TSC stor near you? See if they carry the Farmer's Helper brand feed. It's pricey and it's protein level is up around 28%. This is good for her right now. The FloraGen3 is a probiotic and can be bought at a lot of pharmacies. I get mine from a local one that has it. Again, a little pricey at $15 a bottle but it lasts a long time in the fridge and of course you or other members of your family can take it as well. Good stuff. I still say give her the mega dose of the vitamins and then try the sardines and maybe change the feed. Miss Lydia I think may be onto something with the antibiotic causing stomach upset. the human form of this med., Cipro is harsh. It is one of the only ones I am able to take and I suffer with it after a 10 day course. I use the FloraGen3 for that and am good to go in a couple of days of taking the capsules.

Good point about the feed, Haunted55. Nicole, I hope you and Quackers are having a good evening together. Hope her appetite improves and you both get some good rest.

I'm prettty sure anyone with a sick feathered friend understands how it feels.
She ate cracked corn when she ran out of food a couple months ago. I tricked her into eating a couple cooked spaghetti noodles because she thought they were worms. I will try anything we have. I mixed about a tablespoon of baby food into her yogurt water tonight.
Also some good news, she ate about 5 or 6 full bites of food when I put her away a minute ago!!! I got a little bit over happy when I saw her eating

I found a kitchen scale, she weighs 1860 grams. I weighed her at 5:00 pm today (just as a reminder to myself.)
Nothing on Dr. Whittington, but I think I am going to call the vet tomorrow and ask. He helped my a whole lot and I would feel really bad if something where to happen to him.

I am about to go to the store to buy more grubs, worms, yogurt, and some other foods to try to feed her.

I have never seen sardines without salt. Do they sell that at Wal-Mart? I will also get that if it is available when I am at the store. The nearest TSC is about an hour away, but that is probably where I will have to go tomorrow to get the poultry vitamins. I might get the FloraGen3 tomorrow. If she is felling a bit better, should I still give it to her? How much and how do I give it to her? I thought that the anti-biotic might have something to do with it but I didn't know that the upset stomach lasted that long. It has been about five days since the last shot. Is the FlorGen3 prescription or over-the-counter?

Good news!

I will take little steps, or big leaps, as long as she is getting better. This is serious stuff. Did the vet diagnose this as egg yolk peritonitis, or are they pretty much just going with the evidence from symptoms that she has had some kind of infection, and something is not right with her egg laying? I am trying to clear my mind about what all has transpired. Let's hope that by tomorrow at 5 she weighs over 2000 grams.

Each duck is unique, each time they get ill is unique. I can see how a strong antibiotic could mess up her tummy for several days. When I eat something I am allergic two, sometimes my stomach is not right for a few weeks. And sometimes I get over it quickly.

I looked at their online store, and it looks like they do carry sardines packed in spring water. Just double check the list of ingredients (the labels don't always tell us everything that is in the can).

I would give her the FloraGen3 - it ought to do no harm, and may help her bounce back sooner. I hope Haunted55 has the formula for adjusting the dosage for a little duck.

The doctor immediately diagnosed it as Egg Yolk Peritonitis when I told him the symptoms and conformed his suspicion when he examined her. I will get the pro-biotic as soon as possible.

Yup. Team Quack Quack!

My shopping list is: sardines in water no salt, worms, grubs, yogurt, and FloraGen3... I wonder what that will look like to the cashier.

The 1 cup of baby food and yogurt water I have her last night was all gone this morning.
