Use of flat panel heater in the coop

I will have to keep an eye out, we have been having rain and 20-30 degree temps putting our humidity in the 90s. I got bag balm :) I use it for people wounds too. Ill have to test Digger's patience when i try to put it on his comb lol

Yes, post#37, that was the thread. Sorry to not post a link to it. I will remember next time. The weather has finally warmed up here into the 30's daytime, and 20's at night. Everything is off until we need it again, and HOPEFULLY we won't.

Yes, BOGTOWN Chick, I do watch my chickens. I check on them several times a day, and love to hang out with them. Of course, I only have 4 and I have probably gotten too attached to them. I hope to get 2-3 Plymouth Rocks chicks in the spring. They have stopped laying for some reason, so I guess that is another topic for another thread!

I wonder if you could use the flat panel heater as a chick brooder plate?

I think it has possibilities aart. But keep in mind this particular model we have is 150 watt...you might want to jump up in the model heat strength for brooding. Of course with that comes a nice price hike too. 150 might work...depending on where you are brooding. If it's a nice spot inside your house-insulated etc...then I think you'd be good...maybe...? But I like my brooder out in the garage and I'm not sure this particular one has the gumption to keep the chicks warm enough to be honest.

I know this thread is slightly older, but we're getting really cold after really warm weather, and I have a few "bare butt" chickens. What brand of flat panel heater are you using?

Yep, same one, Cozy 150, got it at Amazon. 150 means it will throw off as much heat as a 150W light bulb. I keep mine low, and used some metal plumbing strap to hold it to the wall so they don't tip it and crap on it ;). I figure if they get too chilly they can stand on the floor by it.

Just tested mine last week.
Best,
Gina

Depending on the coop size, insulated or not... It's not an over powering heater... You may not think it makes much of a difference or you'll think it's just tight. For my coop I think it's just right....

Mine is an Indus-Tool, 150 watts from Amazon. Worked all winter and works now. It kept the coop, 6 x 4, just above 0 when the temps were below 0. That's all my hens needed. If course this year they are molting so I understand the concern about bare butts

I see that the Cozy flat panel heater comes in 100 (model CL) and 150 (model CL-R. Our coop is 10 x 10 (14 hens) and it gets pretty darned cold here in Montana. Just wondering if I could use 2 of these heaters and if so, should I get the 100watt or 150? If I mounted them by the roost would I need to worry how close the chickens got to it? I really dislike the red heat lamp-just seems so risky. Thanks in advance for any info.
