My Coop
Hi All!
I'm looking into adding a small pre-fab coop inside my run. I'm hoping to use it to introduce 5 pullets and as a sick pen/jail house.
Someone I know is selling a prefab coop that I think would work, but I'm worried about biosecurity.

How do you clean it? Is it safe to use or should I look for new?

I have until April 3rd until the chicks arrive.

Thank you!

Give it a nice wipe-down with bleach water. Use a spray bottle to hit hard to reach nooks and crannies. Rinse well...let dry. Give it a month before putting into coop if possible. Most viruses and bacteria resolve within 30 days. If you can wait till April to put it in, that would be really great.
awesome, thank you!

Sounds like an excellent idea.

Do you know anything about its history? How long has it been empty? Were there any issues with the previous chickens? Are there any red flags that would cause alarm?

It sounds like you currently have chickens. Unless there is some red flag it is reasonably unlikely there would be any problems but the cleaning as described above is certainly best practice. Unlikely doesn't mean no way. The longer it has been empty the less likely it is a problem but you don't get guarantees.

When I brought it in I'd want to take it to a far part of the property away from the current chickens. Don't take a chance on getting close to them. Clean it and leave it down there as long as you can, putting it in the run in time to have it set up when you get those chicks but not a lot earlier.

You don't get guarantees with anything in life but I'd consider this about as safe as anything you can do.
