Uses for 'Chicken Wire'

I have an opportunity to purchase 2 rolls of 150' x 6', black vinyl coated, 1" hex pattern, 20-guage chicken wire for $100.

One on-line site I looked at sells it for $160 per roll and would ship two rolls to me for nearly $430. So, I'm convinced it is a good deal from the price perspective.

My question is about the utility of using 20 guage wire around the run.

I guessing the only 'safe' place to use it would be as a roof covering for my 12' x 36' run. Even there I suspect it would be best to make it double thickness.

I'm interested in hearing opinions about if this is a good purchase or would its 20 guage weakness leave me with a false sense of security and my chicks vulnerable.

I use chicken wire and have for years with no problems. I cover the top of the run with it as well. I do use hardware cloth on the first three feet to discourage critters. We have a lot of predators here and have not lost a chicken.

People around here are telling me as long as the seams are firm you should have no trouble - and these people have been keeping chickens in this area for years. I may break down and put 3' high hardware cloth along the lower portion of the run walls, but I'm using poultry wire for the rest of it. I'm still planning on putting them safely inside for the night, this isn't going to be something they'll be able to come and go into as they please. We'll see.

All i ever use is chicken wire. When i first came into chickens I made everything on my own I first started out with 5x5 pens used those zip ties to secure the caging together big mistake. The dogs easily could break the zip ties off never could get into the cages but left places big enough for the chickens to get out of. I still use the chicken wire just secure it now with metal wrapping wire. Nothing in or out!!
