wow thx everyone for your responses. i just imagined that just the presence of a large bird in the pen with the chickens would be a deterrent to any small predators that might happen upon it. of course by the time i'm finally ready to start all this, i'll have a fenced in backyard & the birds would be kept in a fairly large pen with a coop in it. i planned on locking up the chickens inside the coop itself every night & then letting them out in the mornings. i may not even need a larger bird to protect the little flock of hens i'd have, i was just thinkin'....
but the thing is anything loud per say would most likely be a problem with the neighbors & come to think of it, i imagine it would just draw attention to my yard, especially with the other curious & nosy kids in my neighborhood. i also planned on having the pen completely enclosed with a wire top & everything to thwart potential attacks by birds of prey.
