Using bleach to disinfect a yard? Or do I need something better?

You can mail a bird in for a free necropsy to some state universities. If you search BYC for necropsy, you could find it. I think ice packs need to be included. So if you have a box and ice packs, it should be easier that a long drive.
Yeah, I talked to the people at Texas A&M, it was $35 per body per necropsy, plus the $45-50 to overnight it..... when all of this happened, I really didn't have the money, that would have been about $120, plus it was Friday before I got all the info, and I had to work until 5 and wouldn't have been able to get them mailed until Monday. The guy I talked to on the phone was someone who actually did the necropsies and when I told him how old the bodies would be by the time I could get them to him, he said it really would be better if the bodies were fresher than that. I would hate to spend $120 for them to tell me they were too decomposed. I had spent so much money on medicine for everyone and it was nowhere close to pay day so I didn't want to spend our last little bit of money and be flat broke.

We only lost two out of a flock of about 40 total. So it really wasn't too bad. COuld have definitely been much worse. If we lose any more, I will try to send them off for testing. Or perhaps get a blood sample sent in for testing. Really what I wanted to do was find someone that did these things for free for backyard chicken keepers (or at least not as much $$), but tracking that stuff down has been difficult. Most of those places are only open during business hours, and I have been busier than a one armed paper hanger the last few weeks at work, and same at home.

Oh well. I guess we will survive and just have to deal with this from time to time. I wish I knew what it was we were dealing with, but until my money tree starts growing, its just going to have to wait. My poor boyfriend has been working two jobs but should be getting promoted here soon, so hopefully that will solve some of our money issues.

You do not need to live in Kansas to have a free gross necropsy done. They open the animal up and the pathologist will examine it for free. Disposal fee is $11. And additional testing if needed is extra. You can put a cap on the amount of testing or they will contact you. The phone # and requirements for shipping are in this document:

Awesome! I will definitely check this out if I lose another one. I already burned the bodies of the two that already died :( Felt so bad doing that, but I didn't want to bury them not knowing what they had. Thank you for the information!
