Using Garden Hoops to Make Shade

the pokey-outy things

I dig through just about every one of your posts looking for little treasures like this.

O.P. The PVC and T connectors is the route we're going for covering our raised garden beds. If done right it'll last years for you as a "temporary" chicken run/cover.

Wow, 2 1/2 months really flies! I did intent to come back and update how I settled the shade issue.

For a temporary stop gap, I copied someone else's photo that I saw posted somewhere at the time- I just moved the little coop over near a tall fence, and fastened a tarp from the top of the fence down over the coop. Instant shade, and instant rain cover. But it was super ugly, so I did not take any photos of it! :p

I really like Blooie's Hoop Coop idea, but I didn't want to make something that big. Instead, I put together a lot of ideas from different people, and ended up making a PVC-and-wire-hoop-over-wood-frame Baby Grow Out Coop. Then the tarp got removed from the fence and draped over that, with zip-ties. I thought I would whip that together in a weekend or two, but it ended up taking me over a month! The hardest part was making the door for the end. After making the first door, I decided I didn't need to access the other end!

This is just summer quarters for a batch of chicks until they integrate fully into the main flock.

And then, for ventilating and shading the mini coop, since I took it's shade and rain tarp away, I bought a corrugated, rubberized asphalt roofing panel from Menard's, and framed it up on top of the existing roof. (Which hadn't stood up to the winter weather very well, and was deteriorating and leaking.) I also replaced the solid door with a wire mesh door, so that ought to help let the hot air out and give some circulation.

This is empty right now. I did use it to isolate an egg eater for a while. Now I need to clean it out and get it ready for a batch of chicks I have in my garage for their grow out coop. But first I am going to move it to a spot under a tree where it will get at least some shade in the afternoon. Back when I started this thread, none of the trees had their leaves yet. But they are small trees anyway. Their shade spot only lasts for a couple of hours before it moves on.

So, thanks for all your help and ideas, guys!
