In the Brooder
I've seen several threads on this and other sites about using heating pads to make a "cave" for chicks. I think this is the way I want go but I've haven't seen anything about what setting to use on the heating pad (High, Med, Low) and do you lower it over time. Also, I want to use the heating pad to mimic the Premier 1 or Brinsea heat plate (just not in my budget to buy one right now). As I understand it, the temps for new born chicks is 100 degrees. When using a heating pad, does it need to be 100 degrees at the level of the heating pad and gradually cooler toward the bedding or 100 degrees at the bedding level. I have a Zilla Temperature Controller https://www.petmountain.com/product/zilla-temperature-controller?variant=38953 that will turn a heating pad or heat lamp on and off depending on the temp I set. Do I place the thermometer probe on the bedding or up by the heat pad. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
