Using litter in coop-do I or don't I?

I can't be any help with your litter problem for this year, but can offer a suggestion. This summer it might be a good idea for you to cover your chicken run. That way they can go outside no matter if it's snowing. A tarp keeps my run dry. I live in NW Montana. My birds are out in the run all day long. I also put clear vinyl shower curtains on the windy sides so the girls don't get a breeze blowing on them when they are out. Their feed and water are out there in the run. That really helps keep the coop cleaner in winter. Only build up is under the roost. Have a combination of pine shavings, hay, and straw on the bottom of the run. More is added weekly. BOSS and whole corn are tossed onto the floor regularly so the girls stir it up with their scratching. No matter how cold it gets here, and it's been below 0, the chickens prefer to be outside during the daytime.
