Using Plywood for Bottom 2-3 Feet of Run

I've been trying to find a run that uses plywood on the bottom 2-3 feet instead of hardware cloth to keep chicken heads in and reaching paws out. I'm starting with a dog kennel and was hoping to save some money by using plywood on 2 or 3 of the sides, with at least one side left "open" with hardware cloth on the bottom 2-3 feet. If I do this, is there any benefit to closing off one side over another (for example using the plywood on the west side to help block wind; south side to create more shade?)? I live in New Hampshire in case that makes any difference. Sorry if this is addressed elsewhere, but I just couldn't find any pros or cons for this approach. Thanks!

You can use plywood or other solid surface material but know that it will rot faster than the wire.
If you use the plywood put it on the side the snow is likely to blow in during the winter.
Metal roofing material would do as well and last longer. Just a thought. You may be able to find some used and cheap on Craigs list too.
