using small square wire on bottom of coop

We put in a hardware wire floor in our coop. After a week the squirrels are now digging tunnels under the wire. They can't get in the coop but they are still making an interesting mess of the dirt under the coop floor wire.

We are planning to put 3 " of sand on top of the wire and then bedding on top of that. Our flock free ranges so we weren't in immediate need to get them off the wire floor.

Just an interesting project we weren't counting on.

I laid a perimeter of 1' by 1' paving squares around the base of my coop/run. I originally had a wire skirt but it wouldn't lay flat for long - it would get stepped on or crumpled and it looked bad and kept tripping me. The paving squares have been down for almost a year and so far nothing has been able to dig in/under.
