Using Straw in Muddy Run

Lots of folks use this (we have to keep partial bales covered as our six chooks will tear them apart). Some folks have had problems with them eating it (ours zero on seed heads) and the resultant crop impaction. I'd think if your girls have been getting sufficient grit a one time application won't be a problem.

We are still in the process of replacing the wire around the run but here is an idea for you how it looks. It is very, very deep in some areas and lighter in others.

This will give you an idea of what it would look like.
 
We only use hay as we want the seed heads for the chickens to scratch for and some of them drop to the bottom and sprout in early spring which gives the chickens something green to eat.
