I'm going to be buying some chicks soon and was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on the best hens that produce lots of large eggs, are sweet and can withstand utahs hot and cold weather?

I have some Barnevelder chicks hatching soon, they will be great layers, lay dark brown eggs, and are very docile, and friendly (plus very pretty) I am also hatching out purebred Ameraucanas, and some Silkies. The ameraucanas lay a decent sized egg nearly every day and they're very friendly too. The silkies, are some of the friendliest, but they lay small pinkish eggs.

I am in Orem, UT.

Message me if you want more info.

I love the ameraucanas I just got 2 yesterday. Not sure if they are pure bred or not but they are beautiful. I would love a barnevelder I just don't have the space for chicks at the moment. Do you raise chicks often? I'm looking more for hens that are around a year old just because I'm nervous introducing a smaller pullet/smaller breed of hen to the ones I have. I've got 2 ameraucanas and 2 very very sweet red sex links.

I dont hatch often no. I have 2 golden sex links, 2 australorpes, 1 Ameraucana, and a silkie right now. I have actually been very surprised by my silkies egg production.

I love the silkies. One of my ameraucanas laid an egg today and it was much bigger then the sex links. I thought it was weird, thought they were supposed to be smaller. How do you like the australorpes? I'm going to try and find a incubator so I can hatch chicks. It sounds like a lot of fun

I've always raised the australorps, they are great layers, and they have really cool feather coloration in the sun. they have that green beetle sheen to them. I have gotten a few huge eggs from my ameraucana but not often.
