Utah!

Lisa, love your egg art..pretty eggs, you know I love that green one..and, I wish I had a broody hen. I could put a few eggs under her instead of my bator. :)

Sphinx, that egg is not only huge..it's very blue! Wow, love the color, who laid that one? Or did I miss reading that...sorry if you said.

What a darling coop. Someone has a handy man around for sure! Sphinx is right ya know, lots of nice little nest boxes, and your chickens will do as mine and some others hens on here do, wait...for a certain nest box to be free. Making a noise the whole time. It could be the middle nest box in my coop one day, or the right one the next..they just "have" to have the one that a bird is in right then and there.

Whittni, congrats on your babies..I love the mama hen, what is she? The black one.

Oh my goodness beautiful eggs! Love the coops! So much is happening on here. I need to check more often!

Sasha your little Polish you gave me she has just been staying in the same spot and we were having to put her in front of the food and water because she wasn't eating and drinking unless we did. I have been pretty worried about her. Anyway I started wondering if she just couldn't see at all and with it being a new place she didn't know where things were. So it killed me to cut her feathers back but I couldn't believe she had so many over her eyes I know now she couldn't see! Her head feathers are so full and huge! Poor little thing. I feel so bad it took me this long to figure it out. She is a different bird now. She goes everywhere and has been eating on her own. We love her! She has really helped me move on from losing my Gertie. Thank you so much!

So this weekend we are going to attempt to put a roof over the run. I just have a tarp over it right now. Then we are going to put up lattice over the garden area that the chickens LOVE to get into. Ever since we have had the hawk we have that comes into our backyard we have had bird netting up but it is getting messy with leaves and flowers dropping from the trees here. So we are going to make a more permanent covering. It will help the garden too because we get so hot here.

Hope this all made sence! It is late. Goodnight everyone.

Anybody need eggs hatched?

The biggest girl in my flock, and she is BIG, just went broody. Tried to break her of it all day yesterday and today, I give up. She could sit on a dang lot of eggs. Wish she would do this next spring!
If you decide you want some eggs let me know....I can't guarantee which rooster is the daddy, but I have a pretty good idea. Let me know!

Here is the coop that my DH built for me
These are older pictures. We still haven't put the shingles on, and have made a few improvements to it since this. Anyhow, now you have seen our chicken family and home :)
Very nice!
I really like this.

Hattie, I didn't know Sasha gave you a new girl. There are some very awesome people on here. I'm glad she's doing better with the haircut! Good luck on getting the roofing up, too! It sounds like it will really be worth it for you guys.

Whittni, seeing those pictures of your broodies just made my night last night. Thanks for sharing them. What breed is your little black hen? I want to guess Minorca, but I honestly don't know

She's cute.

I've been quiet for a couple of days! My phone screen shattered and I'm waiting on a replacement, so I haven't been around as much because I usually browse from there.

I love the pictures of the Polish babies! So cute! The eggs are beautiful! I also love seeing all the coops, it makes me want to get started on mine all the more! My husband was sick over the weekend (his first and hopefully last bout of kidney stones...he's still suffering with it, poor guy

) so we weren't able to get started.

I have a quick question for you all. I had a friend from another state warn me about lice with chickens but a friend of mine here who has chickens told me that it isn't as big a problem here because of the weather or something...is that true? What do you do to keep buggies away?

I dusted the walls of my coop with a mixture of diatamatious earth and mite/lice controller. It has worked for me so far. I check my birds every couple of days and they have been free of mites and lice all summer. I also let them dust bathe whereever and whenever they want because I know this helps protect their skin from the little buggers.

I also use DE, I dust my birds every other month. I spray Bird Lice/Mite spray (for parakeets, found at petsmart) in the cracks and crevices of the coop when I do the deep clean, then sprinkle Sevin dust around the perimeter of my run and coop to keep critters from entering from the chicken area, we have lots of wild birds around. If I see critters right on my birds, which has not happened so far....I have a mix of DE with a few tablespoons of of Sevin dust added in, that i sprinkle and patdown new birds with before they go in with mine, and I would use that on my girls if I needed to, or the bird spray if necessary, we spray down our parakeets a couple times a year and it does not hurt them at all. I don't want to use the harsh stuff right on my girls unless I need to though, due to them producing our eggs....mine do not free range around as much anymore due to them destroying my flower beds and garden, so my goal is to keep the buggies out of the run and coop and hope that will keep the bugs at bay.

Thanks! I hope she stops it is driving the rest crazy, and I have another one stalking the nests now....if it were a better time of year I would do it in a minute! If she persists, I will let you know :) It might be the only way to make her chill out.

I haven't had lice or mites with my chickens at all, but I haven't really done anything special with them. I have started using DE recently, and it helps with flies, so I'm sold.

I hope your dh doesn't get kidney stones again, Aravis. I hate to say it though, but I've never known anyone to only get it once. Does he drink soda? I've heard that can make it worse.

Hattie, I bet that roof will be really nice for your chickens. I'd say it'll come in handy this winter, but I think your winters are pretty mild.
