Don't know if you'll need 50 pounds either. I do lots of chickens (for a back yard operation anyway...) and have used about 2/3rds of a bag in about 18 months. Plus I've given away a couple of cans, and small bags to neighbors. Maybe split a bag with someone from here?

I would next time you need to buy... but how do you tell if your chickens have worms? We have 'processed' some in the past and never saw a sign. But I do have horses that need worming.

I hv 16 but 4 are roos that will go free range soon as soon as I get up the nerve.

Shoot - we've had a hen with leg problems so we pulled the rooster out for a bit otherwise I'd give you some fertile eggs.

BTW - I've purchased DE from Steve Regan when the computers are working and it was for $25. They did say that the price does vary at times.

I feel like a horrible chicken mum. I thought that our dominique had reinjured her leg from when she broke it. Turns out it was bumblefoot... and it had gotten bad. She's at the vet right now, hopefully they can get the plug out, it was pretty deep.

How long ago? I ~believe~ they stay fertile for 2-3 weeks...

Your hen most likely just sprained/strained. Bumblefoot is a bacteria infection of the foot pad. She had a swollen foot with a dark black scab/abscess on the bottom of the foot pad. (Looks JUST like the picture in the Chicken Health Handbook) It acts as a "plug" and then you have to drain the pus out and keep the foot wrapped and make sure the infection doesn't spread. Only the plug was too deep and has to be surgically removed.

The vet says she has a good chance at survival/recovery if we change the bandage every day. Considering we nursed the two frostbite survivors back, I'm hoping we can nurse Etta back as well. I just should have paid more attention, but she was a HORRIBLE patient with her broken leg and it never 100% healed so I figured she had just reinjured it. If it would have been the other foot, I would have paid more attention.

Hello all. I must reduce my flock I got busted by Sandy City; I am allowed total count of 6 animals. My youngest daughter has a dog (not to mention a dozen other different critters, frogs, lizards, and snakes) which gets along with the chickens really well and also guards them (#1). My older daughter has a cat (#2)(a waste of space in my opinion ( she doesn’t read this website)). Which now allows me four chickens, I have 12 chickens. I have 6 hens around 15 months old, two dark silkies, two beautiful bantams, a red sex link and an Americana. I bought 6 new chicks this spring before I got in front of the law, 2 silver laces W, 2 black A, and 2 cooper M. I have to start somewhere so red and mango have to go. Basically because red can be a b-t-h. She was younger than the five other bantam chickens I had and after Moon died she got out of control trying to take over, she is not a good boss but she lays a large amazing brown egg almost every day even in this heat or cold. Mango must go with her because she is a clutch mate. I got the two together and Mango may be lost without her otherwise, red would go to soup camp even if I was the only one eating. Mango’s egg isn’t as large as Red's or as frequent but she is a good bird and lays a very pretty light green (sort of blue) egg. If you’re looking for eggs these girls will provide a nice collection of color I would like 25 for the two of them.

I don’t believe so; I think it was one of my daughters so called friends. I’d been hoping for some kind of reprieve but it doesn’t like it’s going to happen. My wife’s parents are going to take my bantams and silkies and maybe one or two of the babies and I’ll at least be able to see them. But that still leaves me with too many. I thought I’d put them up here before I go to KSL.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how to motivate a hen to lay in the coop? They are popping out eggs all over my 1 acre back yard (much of which is half-wild), occasionally in the front yard, the compost bin, and it's getting a little bit old. They have very nice nesting boxes in the coop, and I put fake eggs there to show them where to lay. All to no avail.

By the way Marty, how did you do with the fertile eggs?
