Way to go Cynthia! You will have lots. I have two long greenhouse trays....I need to get a few more so i can plant one each day, feed one each day...grow a few in between. I am excited...mine has some nice green shoots today. Not a lot, but a few, and starting to have "hair" all over, shoots and roots. I am thinking 2 more days to feed. Mine is taking a little longer than what the others have....maybe my lighting/temp is not just right. I soaked mine last thursday night, planted on Friday I think? So today is day 6, but it still has a ways to go. It is fun to have something to grow I am liking it a lot.

No, when I looked outside this summer, there were mice running around in the run.  Made me mad.  Found the hole, put the hose down it, had it on the hardest spray, and sprayed away.  I haven't seen the mice in there since, but, have seen a mouse come out from behind the fence, where the nursery hutch is, and just sit up and look at me.  They are everywhere when you have chicken food out.  The get in the coop, they get into their feed bowls.  And Like Brad said,  they eat the mice anyway.  I saw a couple of mine playing tug of war with one a few weeks ago.  I said, go girls!  Get all that you can catch.  Yep, the chickens live with the critters.  And, with a whole lot of other critters we don't see..ewww!

Ya! I have mice tunnels under the rails on the bottom of my run. a little network. And under the cinderblocks where the water and feeder sit. I got on the webcam to check on my girls before bedtime...it has nightvision...and there were the glowing white eyes of a little mouse in the coop, running around underneath my sleeping girls. I ran out there and scared him away, came back in and turned the cam on...there he was again. Eeeww it makes me hopping mad. I have put a few walk-in traps out there but no luck yet. Hey Birdman, what do you do for mice? Anybody else? Would love to hear the different ideas I had put cut 12 inch pieces of black pvc with mouse killer in the center...this has always worked well around the yard and the dog cannot get to it, but i read someone post that the mice eat the bait then it can make the girls sick if they eat the mouse...we have lots of voles too. They tunnel in the grass under the snow.

Lisa, I understand the concerns about getting the girls sick if they eat a poisoned mouse. If it weren't an issue, I would put out bait blocks for the vermin. Tomcat works wonderfully, but I don't want my girls to get sick, so no poison. Right now, I'm just using the best natural resource I have - cats. We've got three at our house, and they're all good mousers. My BF has an outdoor cat at his house that has been eating the mice and voles he has out there. Really good cat. I may try some traps in the back of the shed. Mice are supposed to like peanut butter.

I forgot to mention something this morning. I was reading through one of my chicken books last night, and I am really wondering if my Cuckoo Marans hen wasn't actually a Dominique. Her shape looked Marans-ish, but her leg color, barring, and comb all looked almost identical to the Dominique breed. It would also explain why she only ever laid light brown eggs. Wow, do I feel dense.

for mice i have a cat that is super good at getting them. i also fence a little area off with chicken wire and put a few traps up. i like this trap http://www.lowes.com/pd_19893-446-0320310_0__?productId=3199741&Ntt=mouse+trap its good because the mouse cant just knock the bait off to eat it because the little well holds it in. i take a plastic bag and nip the corner off and pipe peanut butter into the well. you do not want the peanut butter to overflow the well but you want enough to get the mouses attention. also remember mice walk along close to the wall, they do not like to be in the open so they hug the wall when they walk so set your traps so they are likely to hit them. peanut butter is by far the best bait because they love it and they can smell it from far away. for the tunnels i would go to cal ranch and get some of the rodent smoke bombs, you take them and stick one end in the tunnel and the fuze side sticking out and pack dirt around it to seal it off and seal all the other exits off and then light the fuze and it will pack their tunnels with a large amount of poisonous gas and it will kill them and you will not have to worry about their bodys. and it will work on any rodents that live in the ground.

so is there an avian specialist you could take her to? If not perhaps you could have your vet contact one, It may be something that could be treated with an injection

i dont have mice at my house because i have owls in my neighbors yard. i didnt know till a couple of weeks ago. it does make sense because there are huge nests in their trees. the owls are only as big as seramas bodies. i dont know why they have huge nests.

I really like this post. I will get myself some of this stuff here...then I am going to paint black smudges under my eyes, dress in my camo gear and boots, and sneaky sneak out there and give 'em the best I got. I am taking these mice out!

i am happy you found our posts helpful also a good bait for voles and gophers and animals like them is onion, its good because it has a strong smell they can smell far away and its also a common thing they eat anyway. oh and if you have any holes in a building like your house or whatever stuff it with steel wool, it will stop them and if they try to eat it it will shred their insides up.

I picked up a coop on ksl.com. I'm super excited! It was only a bit more than our budget for building it, so it made sense. We just have to get the run built on to it. Is there anything special I should do to clean it before letting my girls in?
