Utah!

We did the second decrow on Warren today. When I left the clinic he was wrapped in a warm blanket on a heating pad waking up from the anasethetic. we will see how this surgery goes. She was much more agressive with the scalpal this time. She laughed and said well if it doesn't work this time third time is the charm, As she does it we take extensive notes so we can remember what was done before. That way if she needs to be more agressive in clipping the airsacs and the trachia she can. he has been in the kennels in a cage crowing all the time so its been pretty funny when people are in the waiting room hearing a rooster crow, She has a silkie rooster that we are going to do next. that is in the kennels crowing. He has a very loud crow for such a small bird.
We got a nasty letter from the power company saying we are using more electricity than our neighbors. We do, I have the 4 bulbs in the coop the heater in the koi pond and heated beds for the cats. I have decided to get solar. My son is in town and he owns the second largest solar company in Arizona. Utah power has some sort of rebate going on this month so we are going to apply to get it and have solar installed on the house. I may have a couple of panels put on cluckingham palace as well.

Oh, Sundance, that is so exciting!!! Both the surgery and the solar. I can't wait to hear how the surgery goes.

Now, on to solar power. I love the idea of using some solar power. I know the initial investment is kind of steep, so I don't want to bother right now because we are planning to move in the next couple years. But, our next house is going to be the house we're in for decades, and so I definitely want to invest in solar there. You'll have to go into excrutiating detail with me so I can learn a lot and be ready when the time comes.

Ugh, Sundance, sorry you got the nasty letter, but I'm glad you have connections to get some solar power going. Cool stuff (or should I say, hot?)

Haha, Lisa, thanks for making me smile. It has not been a very good day, and your erm, pep talk did give me a snicker.

I can't remember if I said this already, sorry, but the bulb in our heat lamp shattered yesterday from the cold. I don't know what surprised me more - that it got cold enough to do that to our new lamp, or that I was right in thinking it might happen. We need to figure out something else to help get our chickens through the deep freeze months. That coop is too small for all of them, and it's so dang cold outside. My BO can't even go out. She gets cold too quickly. I'm mad that I didn't get the second run built before winter, but it wouldn't have done much good, anyway. I'm actually using most of the plywood as panels on the run we have to help block the weather.

I've had the thought a couple of times of getting some cloth diapers for my BO and bringing her in the house. I just can't quite talk myself into it, though. We'd have to keep the dogs penned in the other room, and I can't picture a chicken walking around in our house. I'm not sure what else to do with her, though, save for keeping her in the garage. She hates being caged so bad. I think that's part of why she's looking so stressed lately.

I didn't know it could get cold enough to break heat lamps. My chicken saddle came today. if any one wants a pattern I can try to make some. Cheer up things will get better

i have been researching solar and wind power since the wind can blow so much where i am at. i hate rocky mountain power. they want us to do one of those things where we would only be able to use our ac when they say so, i told them where they can stick it lol. i am sorry but if i am paying for the power i will use it when i need it. i do not like people trying to micromanage the way i live. and rocky mountain power is heading into that direction. if i had the money i would do solar and wind but i am poor. let us know how your experience with solar power goes. and thanks for keeping us up to date on the decrowing :)

It was Rocky mtn power that sent me the nasty letter Not only did they say we were using more power than our neighbors they made us pay a fine for over use, Made me mad. They are offering a rebate for solar energy installers it expires Jan 31 so I am going for it. My son is up here doing sales for people that qualify for the rebate. If anyone wants an estimate send me a pm and I'll have him get in touch with you

For those who are having problems with their heat lamps, the ceramic heat emitters used for reptiles won't break. They screw in just like a bulb. No light is produced, but if it is heat you are after they do a good job.

wow is that even legal to fine you like that? i would fight it. sorry they are being so mean to you. it would be nice not to have to rely on them at all for power. we are working on getting our wood burning stove in because it would be a lot cheaper to heat our home and we would not have to rely on questar gas so much and we would not need to worry about rocky mountain power so much because you cant use a furnace if you do not have power. i am what you would call a prepper. i know if the government wanted people out of a area they would cut off utilities because it would force most out of their homes. you are smart for doing solar :)

Ok guys, I have a gender guess for you. Sundance and Cynthia, I am thinking you might know this one where you have seen a lot of silkie and showgirl combs.

I have the three showgirls, one is definitely different, narrower but a few little bumps. The other two have really wide flatter combs, one looks a little pink.

So which do you think are boys and which are girls?

The narrower one, with a tiny ridge popping up. These are all the same chick. I originally thought the bumps meant boy, but the pink showing up on the wide one made me think I have it backwards.

Ok the next two chicks have similar combs, but very different than the first.
See how wide? But flat.....but a little pink on the third pic?

I feel pretty sure I have one something, and two of something else. Ha ha. But one of what and two of what? lol
