Can chicks and ducklings be in the same brooder?
we raised chicks and ducks at the same time last year and I can confidently say we could/would NEVER put them in the same brooder. The ducklings do grow up so much faster than the chicks and will trample them without hesitation. And then there's the fact that they are soooo ridiculously messy. And they LOVE it! They'd poop all over the chicks and their food and water. And they stink. And are messy. And have I mentioned that they are messy? LOL.
Having said that, we love out ducks...but if they weren't my daughter's and her responsibility, I wouldn't have them at all.

I think you need to have a talk with your DH and ask him were he is hiding the new chickens.

Heh, that might work if I had a DH!

As it is, I am thinking about grilling the cats, sneaky little buggers that they are...

Casa my eggs still have a couple week. Luckily 3 boys left yesterday to good homes. So with these 2 I have 8 on bottles. Well at least until the next 2 pop.
This little doe had me worried last night, I couldn't get her warm enough to even feed. So I filled the sink with warm water and stuck her in a garbage bag so she didn't get wet and stuck her in the water. that warmed her up quick and she drank an oz. of milk. I put a jacket on her and she slept until 5 this morning. then she actually stood up and let me know she wanted food now.

I think she will be ok. I have never seen one this tiny and we have had small kids but they are usually twice as big as her. Her brother is huge though.

Had to show the size difference between these 2. She is doing really well this morning.

Aww..soo cute! I'll take the little one.
Hey blu, went to see your photos, and wow, you have some beautiful chickens. And I have a question...is that last picture a picture of your set up for the chickens???!

I had no idea you were a single mom. I can now relate to you even more..more than on that ~ I love chickens level.

Three boys ey? You have your hands full. Sounds like you are doing a great job. :)

Was single a couple of different times. Finally Found Scott. :) 21 years next month. I was almost 40 when we married. 12 kids, his, mine, and ours. Not quite sure how I did that when I look back. lol..but they are all worth what ever happened back then. I was so busy time flew, and before I knew it, my DH and I are here alone. Great kids, all of them.

Heads up. I will have some chicks soon. There I go again, counting my chicks before they hatch. But I feel pretty good about these. I have some OE's in, and a lot of EE's. I saw what some of the babies will look like from the Feb. hatch a long. The guy I got these very fertile eggs from, has some hatching. They are darling. I will want to keep a couple of each kind. But the rest will be up for a cheap-cheap sale.

I'll admit, I got the hint a while ago that you were a single mom, Donna. Single moms are a force to be reckoned with! My parents have been divorced for twelve years, now, and I've seen my mom do some incredible things to keep our lives on track and our house a suitable home. Usually it was a situation where she looked at me and my brother (who's seven years younger than me) and we all kind of went, "Well, I don't know anything about this." And she still found some way to plow forward and get things done. She is one of my heroes.

Cynthia, don't you mean "Cheep cheep"? Haha

I'm glad those eggs are still doing well! Though I'm still a little disappointed that more of the OE's haven't made it..........pooh!

Blu, oh goodness, sweet babies! I can't imagine how busy you guys are there. I'm glad that little doe is doing so much better. She's such a cutie.

Hey, I keep forgetting to mention that I solved the mystery of the shaved chickens. I was talking to my boyfriend and found out that the chickens would stand right in front of the light he has out in the shed for heat for them. The thing is, it's meant to be a lamp used on construction sites, so it gets VERY warm. He said they would stand there until their feathers were literally smoking. That's when I got my epiphany and went, "Oh my gosh. Those dumb chickens are burning their feathers off!" Ah, well. Now we know

I need to get a picture of them up on here, when I can. They sure have some interesting-looking feathers now

I think I want to pull out my incubator tonight and set a couple of dummy eggs in it to kind of see how it works. I should have some eggs in the fridge that aren't fertile, so I'll use those. I told my mom I wouldn't have chicks until Easter. Kinda funny-- I had a dream last night that I took the bator out of the box, and it was barely big enough to cram six eggs into. I was like, "Oh no!"
